I switched careers in my late 30s. Went from a clean job to hot and dirty. But loved it. You can train and work and as you get better skilled progress to management, supervision. Once your in, you’ll see the opportunities in other areas too.
Most of them won’t last. The work will be too hard and require too much learning.

Lean as in low body fat.

If you’re looking to start out in a trade, you should also consider plumbing or electrician.

Have you considered being an electrician?

Have you thought about Project Controls for an industrial construction company. May require some travel but I am always looking for people with you background.

A lot of people think this.

I’m a plumber. All last week we were inside a metal building doing a rough in. It was the hottest, most miserable, humid heat so far this summer. Imagine being inside a sauna for 10 hours. It was a blessing getting to go outside in the 90 degree heat with a little breeze during our breaks.
My point is that most trade jobs deal with extreme heat and a few days of extreme cold here in Louisiana. Your body will acclimate to the temperatures the more you’re exposed to it. Just take it slow.

You’ll be 175 after leaving that first attic in July

Where do you live, and are you open to travel?
Unless you want to start your own business, if you're going trade work you should go IBEW apprenticeship.
You'll make more money as a union electrician than you will doing HVAC.

Honestly, you are getting kind of old for that kind of work. You’ll get all of the shite jobs to start your career.
There are millions of men in this country in their 50's and 60's who work construction every day.

My Dad just retired from this line of work.
He says it’s a very lucrative career if you work hard and learn.
He retired as the second man in his company….. and he started at the bottom.

Louisiana doesn't require a state contractor license for technicians, the only requirement is EPA.
Correct me if I am wrong, but most new installs are over the $10K threshold these days
If he wants to run his own business and install new systems, he will need a state contractor's license.

In Louisiana, a Mechanical Contractor license is required for HVAC work if the project's labor and materials exceed $10,000.

You are correct, but going on an assumption most newbies into the field aren't starting their own company.

I have not thought about that. What does that entail? I will google but I’m sure you have better info.

I’ve read through these comments and asked others outside of this thread and have gotten some ideas:
-Locksmithing
-Commercial Refrigeration
-Plumbing
-Project Controls for construction companies
-dump truck to contract out hauling sand and gravel

After reading up on this it sounds similar to what I did at a vehicle manufacturing company I worked at. I worked in investments and monitored assets being installed (buildings, robots, large tools). I mainly followed the projects to have accurate reporting to my direct report monthly.

my buddy from HS did this and he's successful. He also did this in a town of 10k ppl and there isn't another Locksmith for 70 miles, so he services 3 or 4 other smaller cities within 20 miles of our hometown as well

Id shadow someone if you can...
After my sophomore year in college I thought about not going back after the Spring. My brother ran a large A/C business in South Louisiana and had me work for him during the Summer.
1 full summer of going up into a South Louisiana 148degree attic in late July/August was enough for me to go back to college.
Lots of people think they can "handle the heat" until they experience it first hand.
