Correct me if I am wrong, but on the news this morning, I think I heard them say that if the government shuts down people who work at USPS and a few other departments will have to work, but will not be paid.

How does that work? Can you make people go to work and not pay them?

Yes, they will get paid retroactively when a budget is passed, just like all the rest hopefully.

Damn, how many fricking times is this shite going to be asked?

There are a lot of services the government provides that are not deemed essential when a lapse of funding occurs because they are not directly tied to national security, law enforcement, or health or other shite like that.

National Park, NWR, National Forest. EPA inspections shut down for the most part. Same for FDA. IRS largely does not function. Education, Energy, Labor, NASA, Commerce...all pretty much shutdown.

There was numerous emails yesterday about it with the "We fully expect Congress to pass a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown" statement.

So far today...crickets. I don't really care at this point. There is a conference starting on Monday that I have to attend no matter what.

Who do you work for?

All I've seen today are e-mails to the effect of "prepare for your arse to not be working Monday".

Contractor with NASA. As I said, that was yesterday. Absolutely nothing has come across the wire today.

If they are working in a federal office, yes. Otherwise, probably not.

May slow some work down though.

NO, because most Government employee will get back pay for the time off, people like my wife who is a contractor that works in a Government building will not get any pay for the time off and will have to use accrual PTO to cover the time lost during the shutdown. This is why most federal Government employees could care less about the shutdown they know they will eventually be PAID for the time they were shuttered.

Our timesheets were due this week.

We've heard nothing here. But on the way home I'm stocking up on flaky biscuits (when I'm at home I make those for breakfast instead of paying for donuts on my way into work).
