Don’t just do it for the money. A lot of these kids just need a parental figure and guidance.

Plenty are really messed up. The older the foster children get, the more difficult they can become. Which is true for any child, but it’s hard go discipline a sixteen year old that’s been moved around every few weeks for the majority of their life.

A cousin of mine used to foster - but it soon became a big mess - her biological children sued her for neglect, etc etc.

We foster in Alabama and we only get like $450/month, so no it's not for the money. But, some of the people we went through the certification process with were obviously doing it for the money. The only questions they asked were "how much does this pay?" or "do y'all reimburse for that?"

I will say, dealing with DHR in Alabama is a headache and sometimes it makes me want to quit. Luckily, we've had the same kid for over a year now, so they pretty much leave us alone.

Hmmmm - not sure. My cousin helped a lot with drug babies no one wanted - so they did just fine.

There was also an older teen who turned out really great, too.

The worst is two my cousin and her husband got attached to because they fostered these children for years - then at the end right before adoption the parents wanted them back.

We went to the meeting to get more info, and I left really, really depressed... Mostly because of the other "parents" that were there to "foster some kids"

Plus these state governments basically force you to do everything possible to give this kid a good life, only to then reunite them with their meth-head mother

Is it similar in Louisiana? Seems like a ridiculous amount of money, it's shameful that people need to be financially incentivized take care of a poor child, But hell if they're offering.....

We were getting around $400/month for our son before we adopted him so no it's not remotely the same. We are in the process of getting certified in California and it's ridiculous the amount you get per month.

ETA: It was 100% worth it as we now have a soon to be 3 year old son.

As a former foster parent,I wouldn't do it for the money. When the child has to go back to the biological family,it hurts. I would gladly pay back all the money I received to keep the kid. No doubt

Here’s a link to the DCFS handbook for LA, it has the rates on page 69. It’s less than half of California.

Same thing but for MS:

Sounds like you are considering doing this for all the right reasons. You give till it hurts.

Good god.

They’d be better off at the orphanage than with you.
