this is a hella fun app

rented a maserati for our 5th wedding anniversary for $100 and it was the easiest rental i've ever done. just met the guy and he handed me the key and we're done.

no tax, no hassles. you get to pick the exact car you want, arrange where you want to meet and just return whenever you and the guy agree with the tank filled up.

there are 911s, jags, GT-R, NSX, tons of mercedes, etc etc on there at all different price ranges.

you can get a shitty car like a nissan or prius for like $20/day.

i'm a huge fan. i'm guessing like anything else, this works better in larger cities.

eta its also a great way to test out a particular car you may be thinking about buying.

Sounds like a good way to have your car stolen or wrecked.

Wonder how insurance works on this for the owners.

same risk you take with renting out a room or your house.

they do some pre-screening, run your license # looking for tickets, etc prior to accepting you on the site so that helps a bit.

Just FYI: They get really pissed if you leave dead hookers in the trunk.. or so I've heard. Just be careful.

People are less likely to destroy a room than a car I think

Makes you wonder why someone who needs a $100 supplemental income owns a goddamn Maserati

Regular personal auto insurance would be within their rights to deny a claim resulting from you renting your car out. Any personal auto policy is going to have exclusions in it for things like that or carrying people or cargo for a fee.

A shite ton of damage can be done to a clutch in one day. Insane people hand over their key for a few hundred dollars.

I've used it a few times when traveling CAD. The problem I always come back to are the mileage limits.

For example, we rented a Subaru in Denver to drive to Steamboat. With the mileage limits, we really had to be aware of our driving and make sure that we weren't going out of our way to get to specific places.

Same thing when we rented one in SFO for driving up to Napa.

Another thing is no one way rentals (which isnt a fault of the company). But I have to admit last summer, it was pretty nice reserving a sedan for pickup through a tradional car rental company in Reno, getting to the desk and getting upgraded to a 4Runner, then having unlimited driving miles from Reno to Tahoe to Napa and into SFO.

I think there are use cases for it, but you really have to watch the mileage. You could end up paying way more for a car.

Also Doug DeMuro has been touting them lately on his youtube channel. Great way for him to test out cars I'm sure.
