Lol when I clicked on this thread i seriously thought it was going to be a question about equalizing /balancing the pressure in your ears while ascending steep high stairs in the nosebleed section of the Superdome for the National Title game... I was obviously wrong.

Most nosebleeds are just due to dryness. The lining of the nose will crack and bleed. especially worse in the wintertime....and also if you use a CPAP it probably doesn't help(I know they have humidifiers on them, but you're still blowing high pressure air through the nose for hours at a time, I don't care how much humidity you have it still has a drying effect).

In any case, you can use nasal saline sprays frequently during the daytime and the saline gel at night to help lock in the moisture until the lining of the nose heals. You can use Vaseline/ointment etc it's just greasy.

During a nose bleed, afrin/decongestant sprays can help may the bleed stop more quickly.

Otherwise if you see an ENT, if there's a prominent vessel or a little hemangioma, they can be cauterized or removed. Some people have a deviated septum that can be the source and if continues to bleed despite the above, may need to have it corrected. Very rarely, tumors/growths etc can be the source.

An ENT would put a scope in your nose to check for any unusually large/vulnerable arteries/veins in the front and (especially) the back of your nasal cavity. If they see anything they may cauterize it either in the clinic or potentially in the OR if its in the back of your nasal cavity where its hard to get to.

Overall, probably due to a dry nose or like one other said, a deviation or something similar. Keep an eye on it.

They will also take your blood to check for any coagulation disorders taht could be predesposing you to bleeds.

Also, theyll ask about drug use (be honest), nose picking (#1 cause of anterior nose bleeds in kids), family history of diseases like Wegener's and Von Willibrands dz, nasal medication use, etc.

That seems like an unusual number of bleeds out of no where and having needed to go to the ER is a good sign you need followup with an ENT.

Frontal nose bleeds are easily managed because they are easier to reach and the vessels are smaller. Bleeds from the back are more serious and can be life threatening for the exact opposite reason of frontal bleeds.

If you begin feeling weak/faint or have another serious bleed, go back to ER

Make sure they cauterize with an electro cautery gun. Silver nitrate sucks and is not as effective, it's just a chemical burn in your whole nostril.

Like a previous poster said cauterizing the vessel that's doing the bleeding is effective, just make sure it's with the gun.

Also dont let them put a device called the "rapid rhino" up your nose to apply pressure after cauterizing. It's terrible.

Check for HHT if it keeps up.

My wife was having this problem. ENT said to put Neoaposin in her nose nightly for a week. Did the trick.
