Well, one of them would be me. 48, married for 26 years, 2 kids in college. Maybe you should stop guessing, or buy a clue yourself.

After 48 years on earth how can someone have so little understanding of mental illness, maybe stop posting about it until you at least have a clue.

I've always wanted to visit Mamou for mardi Gras, but after seeing this episode I have no desire. That was repulsive.

Also, Tony seemed mentally checked out and not engaged during the whole episode.

Nurse, I’m so sorry for your troubles. The effort to help your father is also very much helping your Mum. Keep up the advocacy. I was convinced Tony Bourdain was a southern gentleman in his soul when in one of the first episodes I watched him consume parts of a seal I thought were just awful but offered as a show of respect and hospitality by an Inuit elder in the Canadian Arctic. I may have disagreed in some respects with his political ideas but there is little doubt in my mind that he would have been welcome at my conservative, Louisiana proud grand parents house.

Agreed. I want to believe that the presence of the No Reservations crew contributed to the over the top spectacle that looked more like a raging frat kegger than the courir I grew up watching.

As a Cajun, I was worried about how we would be portrayed when his first show aired. It was well done and in my experiences accurate. This one was embarrassing. And it wasn't Bourdain's fault. The joy and enthusiasm he usually brings wasn't there, but the nature of the party probably contributed to it.

Well, like many movies made about La., his show was loaded with clichés about Louisiana life.

Cajun music 24/7, huge pots of gumbo, etouffee', sauce piquant, crawfish boils, toothless coonasses getting drunk and acting a fool, fais do do dancing and the need to go to church for forgiveness.

It looked like a good time to me. Getting bombed drunk in the early am is never going to look good. It was a cold sloppy Mardi Gras this year too which always adds to it. While I haven’t done mamou, I have done plenty of drunken parties in Louisiana, that didn’t seem to be unfair.

Parts unknown in general has been a phoned in version of bourdain. It became more social commentary hamstringed in. I love bourdain but I can only listen to him ask random locals “will it get better?” So many times

I never really saw the draw for an outsider to come to Mardi Gras in places like Mamou. The majority of it takes place at people’s homes so unless you’re invited there’s not much to see

Does someone have to be a hero for me to watch an interesting show about Lafayette/south LA cuisine and culture? Send me the heroes list, so I can watch them.

It was decent, but I can't understand why they wouldn't find a few Cajun Belles to interview instead of the fat slobs. Maybe that's part of the portrayal.

This may have already been answered, but the thread is too long to read fully.

If he was doing the show here, why did he not choose New Orleans? Seems like the city and surroundings would have made a much better show, and a much, much better time for Tony.

Because New Orleans has been done to death by travel shows. The show is called "Parts Unknown" not parts everyone knows. The whole point is to seek out the places and stories most people don't know, or to show a side of a city most have never seen before. People know New Orleans mardi gras. 90% of people in Louisiana have never attended a courier, and 99% of Americans don't even know it exists. That's the kind of stuff this show was made for.

So why choose Mardi Gras season? I don’t really buy that “everyone knows New Orleans”. He’s done a show in every major city on the planet, any one of which are all more famous, more traveled, and have better known locales/traditions than New Orleans.

Going anywhere outside NOLA for a show like this is a guarantee of disappointment. This was probably the worst episode of the whole series, and it was all over Bourdains face the whole time
