So London, Tokyo, Budapest, Paris, etc are “Parts Unknown”? Lol
Very very very few of the shows have taken place in remote or discreet locales. Nearly every one has occurred in a place more famous and travelled than New Orleans. To leave it off in favor of Mamou Mardi Gras seems like a pretty odd decision, given all of the different places he could have gone in NOLA.

So why choose Mardi Gras season?
Because the Courier is a completely unique event that exists nowhere else than Southwest Louisiana and at no other time than Mardi Gras. He has done several shows centered around some random annual festival. Heck, he did an episode about a Rice festival in a remote village in Borneo.

He’s done a show in every major city on the planet, any one of which are all more famous, more traveled, and have better known locales/traditions than New Orleans.
True, but have you watched those episodes? The episodes about those well-known cities all focused on the aspects of those cities that almost no-one knows about. In Copenhagen, it was focused on the life and career of a single chef. In San Francisco, it was all about how the image of the city as this clean, granola-chomping, chipper, gay city is really the opposite of reality. In Las Angeles, it was all about the struggles of poor immigrant communities and restaurants no tourists would ever visit. In Houston, it was all about highlighting the accomplishments of basically any cook who wasn't white. Tokyo? He went to the weird underground burlesques and BDSM clubs that make up a bizarre Japanese counter-culture. Rome? All about Mussolini, a niche filmmaker and his daughter, and non-touristy working class neighborhoods. London? Was all about the Brexit and was spent visiting different sides of the conflict, not highlighting tourist destinations.
Finally, he never went to Paris for this show. He went to Lyon (to do a story about the childhood of a chef friend) and Marseille (to talk about Muslim communities in France).
If you can't see why he made an episode about Cajun Mardi Gras rather than New Orleans Mardi Gras, then you really don't GET this show.

I’ve seen every episode, get off your high horse. I also mentioned that if Mardi Gras was too cliche, simply don’t go during Mardi Gras. The assertion that there are not unknown places in New Orleans to outsiders is just ridiculous.
Of course people from Louisiana would have known the New Orleans locations, people from other places would not have. Either way, it’s just a difference of opininon. I found this episode to be rather trashy and embarrassing rather than interesting. Bourdain seemed to share that sentiment.

I don’t really buy that “everyone knows New Orleans
Do we really need another show about eating a poboy and then having breakfast at Cafe Du Monde?

probably the worst episode of the whole series, and it was all over Bourdains face the whole time
I agree that he seemed unimpressed for the entire episode. He did everything but roll his eyes after getting his ashes. If you're embarrassed to be Catholic, just leave it out of the show.

New Orleans was covered pretty in depth after Katrina during one of his “No Reservations” episodes.

I’ve watched two episodes of his shows and it’s the two times he’s been to Acadiana. The first was really great but I didn’t care for this one much mostly due to the lack of focus on food.

As a citizen of La, absolutely not. But he wouldn’t have gone to the cliche places anyways. My comment was trying to point out that for his wider CNN audience, which almost certainly is not comprised entirely of Louisiana citizens familiar with NOLA, that New Orleans would have been a much more attractive pick.

He has done New Orleans before, more than once too. There are a million other food/travel shows about the city. Everyone in the world knows about New Orleans Mardi Gras, not many people know that’s celebrated in every town in South La.
Did manou come across as a bit trashy? Sure but Louisiana is a bit trashy. Baws were out there having a good time, sorry you have to do some self reflection because your culture looks like a bunch of drunken fools with an outside lense put on it.

Bourdain said at the beginning of the episode that Mardi Gras in New Orleans was not his scene. He wanted nothing to do with it.

Once again, just don’t go during Mardi Gras. Either way this isn’t worth arguing over for two pages. I’m clearly just not as intrigued by SWLA Mardi Gras as some others.

Doubt he was Catholic. Pretty sure he wasn’t religious at all.
Considering Ash Wednesday and Mardi Gras are Catholic holidays....make sense the show would show people getting ashes, and because he always immerses himself in the local culture.... get them himself.

I have no respect for a man that goes to Suires and doesn’t eat the turtle

He was invited to go to Mardi Gras down there when he filmed the last Louisiana episode. He was finally taking up the offer.
