I love living in Nola, but we are seriously thinking of moving. The violent crime is out of control. I'd try to move to a safe neighborhood, but I don't think those exist anymore. Mitch is in way over his head and I don't see it getting any better for a long time.

Canal? We stayed at the Westin on Canal Place for the 2011 Michigan-Virginia Tech Sugar Bowl. There were a bunch of high end shops (Brooks Brothers, Saks, Tiffany & Co. etc). Surely this shooting isn't in the same area?
Yup a quick pedicab peddle away from Saks

We are putting our house in New Orleans up for sale in April and moving out of Louisiana because of the crime. It will save me I estimate close to 100k a year in taxes, private school, and insurance moving out of the city.

This was on the other end of the street. The state palace area has some ghetto arse people hanging out all over there

Holy shite...Chicago's crime is fairly contained to certain specific perimeters of the city. That's absurd that a shooting happened in that area and that specific time of day.

How many times have you been a victim of crime?

If you pay 100k on those three things you are getting some serious bad financial advice or are putting six kids through private school. If the latter, invest in birth control.

I'm honestly surprised there aren't more shootings at the location on Canal.

Once the house was broken into. Second time I opened up the gate to my driveway with my 3 year old in the backseat and two very nice natives flashed a pistol at me to car jack me but took off once they realized I had my son in the back seat. There has been a lot of issues the last few months. My neighborhood prior to the last 4 months has been fantastic.

Seems like it just happened. That bus stop is bad news. Damn theaters should have cleaned that area out.
I drive past Elk Pl and Canal everyday and there are some sketchy motherfrickers that hang out there. The shite of it is, I see tourists and condo-living yuppies that walk around that area like it's no big deal.

Not trying to be rude, but I think it's downright ignorant to raise a family in new Orleans. Move to the suburbs like luling your 20 min from town and blend in much better.

rampart and canal is at least a 15 minute walk from saks, while on the same street, they are not considered the same part of the city.
ihometiger is being overly dramatic

Same street 5 blocks down
In New Orleans a couple blocks can make a difference
This was about a block from the ritz Carlton which btw is the worse RC I've ever stayed at

This is 3-4 on that corner this year that I know of
This one, the Chinese restaurant one, the one where the kid hopped on the bus as a getaway vehicle.... The other that comes to mind might have been a block or two towards the river though.
That intersection is serious trouble and so close to tourist areas, theatres, etc....
