$SHLD (SEARS) files for bankruptcy.

I remember going through the Sears Christmas Catalog every year as a kid, circling all of the things I wanted Santa to bring me. Wow, It's crazy to think all these years later that they are going under.

I never got my G.I Joe Aircraft Carrier

Sears is an iconic piece of Americana. I'd hate to see it die

One of my favorite American Experience documentaries. Ostensibly a biography of Richard Sears, this is actually the story of how the "Wish Book" brought the world to isolated rural farmers around the turn of the last century. The Wish Book and The Bible were often the only two books in some farm homes.

Any one born in the twentieth century in the US could have said this.

Wal-Mart passed Sears in 1989 (in sales volume). That Sears’ demise has been so long and drawn-out is a testament to how big and strong the firm actually was. It took decades of mismanagement to burn through all of its resources.

I had no idea you could buy houses from the Sears catalog at one point.

It’s a shame that the pioneer of the buy anything from home model could not adapt to the online world of shopping. Not to mention their base of “die-hard” loyal Sears customers are dying off at a rapid rate.

One of my great-great uncles had one of those Sears houses. Still standing strong.

I always wanted the toboggan with a steering wheel. My parents thought having one was not practical living in south Louisiana.

I remember the their was a time that I would look at the Sears catalog for hours because of the toys. Then one day I came upon the women's bra's/lingerie and that peaked my interest more than star Wars action figures. Especially since they didn't air brush out the areola's and nipples.

I thought a huge part of their issue over the last 20 years was the retirement packages they owe to all previous, full-time employees. They still have 100,000 people receiving retirement packages. They only employ 68,000 people currently between Sears and KMart.

Colonial homes are awesome. Never go out of style. I'd take this home right now.
Oh, and to the poster that sais "homes were affordable": If so, why didn't everyone own one of these? You have to recall that wages then were probably a few thousand a year, at best.
