Another OTer needing home AC advice...

I’ll start by saying I don’t know shite about air conditioning except that I get pissed when it has issues. Fortunately, that has been few and far between until today. It has officially died. I’m out of town in Kentucky, so I guess that’s good? Our dogs have been taken to the kennel by our sitter. The house was up to 91 earlier.
We had a Ruud. It made it about 15 years. It was 42,000 BTU. Our home is 1 floor, 2100 sq feet. We live about 1/4 mile from the gulf.
I know of some name brands, but nothing beyond that.
Wife (no pics) and I want to try to get the ball rolling in this now. We get home in 4 days and don’t want to stay at my folks place any longer than we have to
Does anybody have any advice or insight for a guy who doesn’t know shite about AC’s?

Get a heat load calculation done so you can properly size the system. Then buy a new unit. 15 years is a pretty good run.

If you can afford it, get a variable speed air conditioner. American Standard/Trane has it as well as other competitors. They are the same company and produc, and offer 60 month financing. The variable speed. maintains a linear temperature, and can keep it within 1 degree. It rarely shuts off so air is constantly moving through your house making it a comfy environment at all times.
My mom's ac crapped out last month, and I convinced her to go variable speed. She loves it and has never felt more comfortable. She used to have the old unit set at 72 because of Short cycling, and now it is at 75. It had a humidity setting so you can regulate the moisture inside the home. It is extremely quiet. I can barely hear the unit run.
Only issue is that you have to replace the entire system inside and out due to the freon phase out to Puron. This applies to any competitor product.
Just remember that the most important piece of equipment in your house is the AC. You cannot live two days without it. Make an informed decision and make sure you get the proper size and type for your house.

I am not going to get into efficiency or brand without a budget but I will say unless you have better than average insulation or the house is in a lot of shade I would want more than 3.5 tons for a 2100sqft house in along the Gulf Coast.

Bro everyone has issues when it first gets hot, make sure the outside unit is clean all around it where it can breath.
Also make sure the inside filter is new.
Get a water hose and wash cool the unit down outside.
If none of that works call an AC guy, I wouldn't buy a new unit unless you have too.
Another option is to buy a small window unit at Walmart to get you by until you figure out what to do. they have one for $150.00. You can resale these easily.

We had a technician out today. Our friend/dog sitter was there while he went through the tests and it is confirmed dead. He tried to reset/restart a few times. I was watching and talking via FaceTime.

Well frick
Happened to us years ago, my neighbor recommended a crew I paid $1,800 cash to for a new unit.
Later on (three years) we noticed the unit serial numbers were missing
But it worked

This is a damn good idea…I’m not one to rush into a $10,000 purchase.

I own a small AC company on the Northshore. Not sure where you are located but we can usually offer a great price on high efficiency equipment installs. We primarily sell Rheem which is the sister brand to your Ruud. You can look us up on Facebook, the name of our company is Eco Air.

It has officially died.

I’m fully expecting to drop $2K-ish or more. But I’ve had friends who have paid $8500. I’m afraid that I can’t get the ball started on this until we get home. I hate that my trip won’t end next week, but instead we will be on a different side of town staying with my parents...
Oh well. I’m just gonna drink it up in this hotel and try to forget the day.

quote:Honestly I would get a second opinion. They're really not that complicated, I wouldn't just accept "it's dead" as a diagnosis.

If you don’t have a trustworthy AC guy get a recommendation from someone who does. Next door app has its uses here. Have him look at it. Could be something as easy as your circuit breaker tripped or a capacitor blew out.

quote:See my next post. If it's not working at all (what I would call "dead"), there is usually a specific part that failed and almost all of them can be replaced. If, instead, everything is working electrically and mechanically, and the refrigerant checks out right, and everything is clean, but it's just not cooling, then probably replace.

I would at least have someone else look at it. It might cost you an extra few hundred, but it might save you thousands.

If you do require a replacement system start thinking well about that.
You might be able to limp it along but at that age and possibly (likely) it is a R22 system you are just delaying the inevitable.

It's going to be more than 2k man.

We plan on having another person check it out as soon as we can. The person today said it was still blowing air, but the coils were bad and the pressure was way too low.
