Tell me this story. Is this recent?

All sleazy louisiana politicians, fits the narrative

FIFY

The poster just referenced the most public politicians. The problem with La politics is no one wants to step on toes and the corruption encompasses all houses and departments. The elected officials say one thing, but once they get to Baton Rouge it's all about special interests once they get a little grease on their palm. It's kind of like Southern Classic Chicken, once you get a taste you want some more even though you know you probably shouldn't.

The crazy thing is that everyone knows that companies are leaving because LA will not invest in infrastructure nor education. Those two things are getting worse every day, and there are no plans to reallocate tax revenues to these area.

La could allocate $20,000,000,000,000.53 to infastructure and education and nothing would change. The problem is not $$$ but our uninformed citizens electing piss poor politicians.

Yeah. Two or so weeks ago. Objectively, Corpus Christi makes better sense given the needs of the facility and its location vs. the site(s) in Louisiana. But it was a good wake-up call that at the end of the day infrastructure and workforce are #1 & #2 on these corporate expansion/relocation decisions.

this makes sense.

hasn't the state won on some in recent years though?

There is also something else to take into consideration. People willing to join the workforce. The O&G industry has caused our unemployment rate to rise but there will always be a segment of the population that will never work...I would say 3-3.5% in La.

If you peel back the onion on these, you'll often see the reality of them. Good example of that where Louisiana "won" but thankfully didn't was the Hawker-Beechcraft plant at the BTR Airport. Hawker was bleeding, LA was a lifeline. Ultimately they were "forced" to stay in Kansas; bankruptcy filed just 20 or so months after they decide to remain.

Yeah. It's just more competitive. And a different set of demands from companies vs. 5-10 years ago.

Eh, most say "full-employment" is around that mark. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hawker would have been awesome for that region if it panned out. A labor-intensive durable goods manufacturing facility just a few minutes away from a couple of really good school districts. It would have really helped bolster the northern part of East Baton Rouge and probably would have helped generate revenue for the airport. May have even helped some of the retail in that immediate area.

IMO they really should try to get another similar manufacturer in that same spot.

If I'm not mistaken, the Beechcraft proposal was for their corporate offices too.

Hawker leaving Wichita would be like Harley Davidson leaving Milwaukee or General Motors leaving Detroit. It was a moon shot for Louisiana. Wichita's metro is smaller than Baton Rouge's by about 200,000 people, but it has been a major airplane manufacturing hub for a long time.

I was surprised to see Indiana has an unemployment rate of 2.9%. When I think of Indiana I think dumb rednecks on meth

I am not sure how much infrastructure and education has to do with anything. I think out of state companies are looking to move to make better profits.

90% of that money wouldn't go to infrastructure and education

Indianapolis is a surprisingly decent town. Their airport is fantastic. People seem reasonably friendly.

Nah. It was for about 1/2 of their mfg.

Nah. They were coming. I was in the room when they told BR it was a go. Really long story about what happened next. I'll share in a bit if I've got time.

There are zero reasons to be in LA anymore

A shite load of chemical plant and refinery jobs say hello.
There are still some expansion and a few new builds in the pipeline so to speak.
Of course none of this has anything much to do with any La politicians doing anything good, just the waterways, pipelines, and rail lines in place combined with cheap natural gas to fuel this industry.

visit Nola for a good time

Not a great economy by any mean (and Mitch is trying to screw it up as fast as possible), but Nola has more going for it than just a redneck tourist trap as the perception is.

So you're saying Broome isn't going to signal to new companies to relocate and pour investment in to Baton Rouge?

Taxation and the legal environment have more an impact on where businesses locate than education and infrastructure.

Nailed it.

Louisiana's graft and good ole boy palm greasing culture is part of why it will always be a state with squandered and wasted potential. I love my home state and most of the people from there. But it's a fricked up place that I would NEVER start a business in and had to leave to reach my professional potential. It makes me sad.
