Our parents took us to Biloxi on vacation a couple of years later and there was still a ship sitting on the beach where it had washed up.

That was one of the most terrifying hurricanes I've ever been through. What it did to Waveland, Gulfport, and Biloxi was unreal. Seeing large ocean going cargo ships on the beach was a picture that will always stay with me

I was 9 years old at the time and lived outside of Bogalusa. We had all gathered at my Grandparent's house. The wind was so strong, I remember looking up and fully expecting the roof to be torn off any moment. It was one of the worst hurricanes I've ever lived through.

My grandfather was principal of a junior high school and in the Red Cross. He opened a shelter at the school and got my dad and uncle to help him out. Somewhere in my papers stashed away it’s the certificate of appreciation the town council gave him for running the shelter.

And don't forget Pass Christian and the Richelieu Apartments, ground zero. You can watch youtube footage of the aftermath of Camille. It looked like Hiroshima.
A lot of the post-Camille structures built in Pass Christian that were intended to be hurricane rated were washed away 35 years later by Katrina. Most prominently St. Paul Catholic Church, which was built like a steel triangle to withstand storm surge. Katrina obliterated it.

Was in the park recently with the family and saw the Camille memorial. Sobering to look at. Some partial, or possibly entire families on there.
