1969. Before i was born but my Dad always said it was the benchmark. Wind gust clocked near 200mph broke Biloxi AFB Wind Gauge

Because of Camille happening on August 17th ; always made the 17th the 1st Day of "Real" Hurricane season

If you like reading about Hurricanes try Isaac’s Storm by Eric Larsen. Really good book about the storm that destroyed Galveston in 1900 (I believe)

I guess that means 57 years ago tonight I spent the night in a shelter in Lafourche Parish somewhere. I was too young to remember.

I was probably right there with you in Lafourche...too young to recall tho...went through Besty there as well as a 1 year old....our roof nearly came off with me and my 2 month old brother in bed in my mom's arms...

I was almost 10 years old and my family was in the process of driving home from a vacation out west.
My wife, who had just turned 10, rode it out on the Mississippi gulf coast about a mile from the beach.
Some years ago we were at a banquet at which Bob Breck was the guest speaker. He gave a fascinating talk about hurricanes. At one point he said that he bets that no one in the room had actually been in the middle of a category 5 hurricane. My wife was the only one who was able to raise her hand.

It’s wild to me that if you overlaid the storm paths of Katrina and Camille, there would be an X where the pearl river passes by Bogalusa. Both of those storms absolutely wrecked that area.

My dad was 8 in the Gretna area and says he remembers nothing other than the noise, and it's why whenever there was a chance of something similar - we got out,

It truly is amazing how many close shots New Orleans had.
