The gal had walked away. His retaliation was bullshite. Had he reacted initially, an argument could possibly be made but I failed to see him truly try to restrain her advances.

Perfectly within your legal rights to defend yourself, but only just to the point that the person assaulting you is restrained or "put into submission." But nevermind legality. She's a woman. The law is unimportant.

The only time I have ever hit a woman that wasn't during aggressive consensual sex was completely by accident.
I was standing in a bar by some pool tables and I got hit, hard, across the back of the head with a pool stick.
I spun around with a mean right hand, and at the last possible second I realized it was a woman and was able to open my hand and pull the punch back.
Ended up slapping her to the ground with my fingers.
Her boyfriend threw a punch, which I deserved and took on the chin. Unfortunately he continued to fight, we ended up in a brawl. Cops were called. I was cuffed. Thankfully witnesses called her the aggressor. I refused to press charges and they were kicked out of the bar.
To this day, I have no idea why the bitch hit me in the back of the head with a pool stick.

Once a woman uses her fist or she goes beserk attacking a man she should be handled like any other man would be, but you gotta know when to stop.
