A woman looking for artifacts along the Red River in northwestern Louisiana spotted a dugout canoe in the mud of the riverbank. Jeffrey Girard of the Louisiana Archaeological Society and Robert Chip of the State Archaeological Division excavated the cypress-wood canoe, which is missing one side. What remains measures about 34 feet long and three feet wide, and is thought to have been constructed by the Caddo people between 800 and 1,000 years ago. The vessel will be studied and conserved at Texas A&M University. A sample has been taken for radiocarbon dating.

Three feet wide. Sounds tippy.

Pretty cool. I've always had an interest in archeology.

Why couldn't this specimen be studied and "conserved" in Louisiana? Does LSU not have capabilities for this?

My grandparents had a small dugout canoe in their front yard for years. They donated it to a museum but I don't think the museum ever did anything with it. csb

hope the landowner didn't have any plans to develop his property, because now he's fricked if he did.

I believe aTm is only preserving & dating it. They will then return it to the couple, and they plan on donating it to a museum.

The last one they found was preserved and is on display in the Louisiana exhibit museum in Shreveport. This one will have a similar fate.

I grew up in the belcher area and after high water events, like the red River flood last year, the river banks are a great place to look for artifacts. I'm assuming this dugout was from the caddo Indians who lived in the area.

I was at Rockefeller Refuge in 1985 when they found an intact dugout. Really cool partially exposed along a bayou. They did a bit of research on site then sent it to the LA state museum in NO...still there?

Great story.

I've an uncle down the bayou that hand carves cypress dugouts. He will surface old cypress logs or someone will bring him one and he will carve out a pirogue for them, for a nice price of course. They are a thing of beauty. And perfectly balanced as well.
