All 40 people will ride it and the three states will spend millions to subsidize it.

What's the Under/Over line for total "violent" incidents during its first year of operation?

Bingo. I work for the railroad and see this as a waste of money. Amtrak trains create problems for dispatchers as freight traffic is the priority for many reasons. If given the choice, Amtrak will be put in the siding to wait for a freight train(s) to pass. Once you get hit by delays, the farther the distance, the more delays you can and most likely will accumulate. Even if you took freight traffic off the CSX line to Mobile, This schedule needs to be a lot more competitive in comparison to the drive time between both cities. Why would I pay more money for a longer trip?

These places will become day trips for tourists to escape everything you love about New Orleans.

I personally hate driving, especially long distances.

I don’t mind driving long distances as much as the shite traffic. Mostly open road is usually pretty great or at least bearable.

5 hour train ride over a 3 hour car drive. Much more space to move around, go to the restroom, bar and dining car.

People gonna be stumbling off that train housed. Arrive shitfaced and try to figure things out from there.

I’ll set the O/U for this trip at 5 hours on a good day. Who is this for?
---I vote 8 hours, since they won't be going more than 40 mph and will be stopping 2x in Mississippi.

They should do one between NO and Houston.
---There is one. 9 hours.
If you added BR it would be another 3 hours at LEAST

If the timing works I’d love to take my kids on the train from Nola to Gulfport, walk onto the ship island ferry, see the beach, and come back in the same day.

I imagine doing this one time and saying never again when I get home.

Is there still that homeless encampment right across the station in Nola? Because that ain’t pretty.

Sounds about right. The novelty of a train ride wears off pretty quickly once you've been a slave to their schedule, experienced the culture on the train and in the stations, dealt with the logistics once you get there (Ubers, etc vs just driving where you want to go).

But yet the "high speed rail for everyone now!" people will keep up their whining and still not use this option.

ETA: I did hear "Pacagoula run" on my run this afternoon so being able to say you're on the Pascagoula run just once would be kinda fun.

There are no train tracks in that area: other than a dip down to Pensacola, the CSX line runs further up north through places like Atmore, Milton, DeFuniak Springs and Chipley.

And NO ONE is going to pay for new rail right-of-way, new railroad construction, and a bunch of new rail bridges.
