Amite, Comite River flood-fighting projects approved by Metro Council as parishes join forces to clear debris
LINK
As part of separate multi-million-dollar projects aimed at improving East Baton Rouge parish flood mitigation efforts, the East Baton Rouge Metro Council unanimously approved two agreements Wednesday to appropriate funds for clearing and snagging the Amite and Comite rivers.
The agreements will provide funding to clear debris in the Amite River from Bayou Manchac to the St. Helena Parish line and in the Comite River from La. 64 to where it meets with the Amite River just southeast of Denham Springs.
Clearing debris, tree limbs and fixing crumbling riverbanks will enable water to move more efficiently through river channels, preventing flooding by curtailing backups that could force excess water out of the rivers.
The city-parish is collaborating with the city of Central to clear the Comite River and with Livingston Parish to clear the Amite River.
During the last flood, the river bank on a lot of bends collapsed and tree/shrub debris has built up on the river bed.

Good.
2016 got fricked like it did because all the creeks and other waters back flowed from the Amite, Comite, and other bodies of water which were overtaxed.
Fixing issues with those rivers should help BR as well.

I paddled down the Amite about 5 years ago with my, then, 15 year-old son. He got an education that day when we got near the tube rental place and had to navigate all the tube traffic.

Old Layton called me out about a year ago when I claimed this work was overdue. He even told me he'd take me out on a boat to show me.
You ever been on a BOAT on the Amite thru Livingston Parish? F*ckin' inner tubes can barely make it.
Now, it needs the work again? Or maybe it never was done in the first place?

What we really need now is the Darlington Reservoir to capture and retain some of the excessive flow into the Livingston/EBR/Ascension areas during high water.
Then a canal and pump (similar to Comite Diversion, but smaller) that pulls excessive flood waters from the Spanish Lake basin and pumps it over the levee into the Mississippi. And that has to be accompanied with development controls alongside the basin and a continued regional effort to keep Manchac clear of debris and flowing.
Those two should make the Baton Rouge metro area pretty robust when it comes to river flooding.

Was it full of fresh water whales or the mythical OT-10's?

It’s a start, but the Amite also needs to be dredged.
Btw, last night the CP Counvil approved a drainage district.
The next step is a need tax.
They claim they are in trouble eith the Feds and we have to do this. They sit on their asses let infrastructure crumble, create a crisis and then solve it all with a tax. This is how the sewer thing started.

Some from each category but more of the former than the latter. No shortage of tattoos. But they were mostly hospitable. We were offered plenty of alcohol and even saw a titty or two.

Now that it is a utility and they can tax you - off they go. Makes you wonder how many libraries were built, buses purchased and BREC parks wasted with money that could have cleaned up the rivers and helped save people's homes?
