I'm not much of a soccer person, but this has been a really awesome event. Seeing all the foreigners enjoying our country has been a lot of fun.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is delivering a masterclass in global monoculture, stacking blockbuster ratings, on-field theatrics and a superstar race for soccer immortality.

Why it matters: Skeptics spent months bracing for the World Cup to collide with a polarized, parochial and priced-out American public. The tournament has answered back with the largest U.S. viewing audiences in soccer history.

State of play: Even with all three host nations eliminated, ratings, attendance and buzz are through the roof heading into a dream semifinal slate: England–Argentina and France–Spain.

USA–Belgium in the round of 16 drew a final combined audience of 50.1 million viewers on Fox and Telemundo — the largest soccer audience ever recorded in the U.S., even in a 4–1 blowout loss.

Mexico–England turned Estadio Azteca into a crucible of noise and nerves, as 80,000 fans nearly roared the home team to an upset before England escaped 3–2. The spectacle pulled in 46.7 million U.S. viewers.

Together, Fox says these were the most-watched non-NFL sports events in the U.S. since the 1994 Winter Olympics.

quote:

Zoom in: On the ground, the World Cup has transformed into a massive, unexpectedly festive cultural exchange, completely upending pre-tournament anxieties.

FIFA says 6,259,584 fans attended matches through the round of 16, filling 99.7% of seats with an average crowd of 65,204.

More than 7.7 million fans have packed FIFA Fan Festivals across the three host countries, turning downtowns, parks and plazas into rolling global block parties.

Viral scenes of fans marveling at America's abundance — tailgates, ballparks, all-night diners, reflexive hospitality — have united millions in an unlikely, uncomplicated moment of national pride.

Netflix, Disney and YouTube are already betting this time is different, considering bids of up to $2 billion for combined English- and Spanish-language U.S. rights to the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.

It was great to see visitors see America for what it really is instead of the “progressive” propaganda their media shoves down their throats

England Argentina is gonna be epic. I feel really tempted to try and go given it’s only an hour flight away. Prob be the closest Ill ever be to a World Cup match of that caliber.

What people have seen is that the majority of this country is filled with good people who have minor differences but get along quite well.

The extremes that are pushed by both sides of the media circus don't represent us and are the vast minority. Media tries to paint those extremes as "what the other side is like" when none of that is true.

What the world cup visitors saw was a country full of diverse people, places and cultures that get along quite well.

What should be highlighted in our country is that when disaster strikes we band together and lift each other up (Cajun Navy as an example)

I try to stay neutral on most things......
But I am so happy Fox covered the World Cup.

Because, did anyone notice that Seattle picked a "Pride Game" to throw a pride block party for?

It so happened to be Iran vs Eqypt game. Very very in your face game to choose.

Fox refused to address it all. No pride flags shown outside pregame and none indoors.
Other channels would have highlighted it all day long.

Im glad we were able to focus on soccer!!!

This would be a disaster. The games were able to be universally watched because it was on Fox. Most people could watch without having to use a streaming app, only one of these could do that which is Disney with ABC. Ratings would drop if it’s on Netflix or YouTube.

It also helped that being in the US, the time zone wasn’t a big issue

Morocco, Spain, Portugal - which is great for European markets, but also not terrible for US markets.

2034 is Saudi

That wasn’t Fox, that was FIFA because Egypt and Iran both threw a shite fit.

Just a reminder, these are US viewership numbers, not worldwide.

I do like how foreigners got to see how different Boston people were from Dallas folk, etc. But all nice to be around, because there's a certain demographic that doesn't attend the fan fests, pubs, and matches.

I've been to the last three Argentina matches. Incredible scenes. Back to Atlanta for England.
