This growth in Austin coupled with the continued growth of San Antonio will cause the two cities to merge in the next decade.
Combined MSA population:
2014 4.27 million
2030 5.71 million

i live about 45 miles north of there. i have a love hate relationship with the town. it's got some fun stuff for and great food for sure. but it's stupid expensive, with stupid traffic, with stupid people.
my favorite thing about Austin is the 130 loop.

truth. i'm up and down 35 between the 2 a few times a month and the only country is between Buda and San Marcos, and Shertz and New Braunfels. and those areas are shrinking with haste.

Austin is going through what Atlanta went through in the early to mid 90's, to a lesser extent of course. Metro Atlanta was well over 2 million people in early 90's, but now it's over 5.5.

Sucks and Nashville do not belong in the same sentence, but being in Texas gives Austin a slight edge.

I live in Austin and spend lots of time in Nashville. They are very similar cities - Nashville's immigrants tend to be from the South and Midwest, while Austin's are from California and other parts of Texas.
Nashville traffic (Brentwood/Franklin/Nolensville) is quickly becoming like Austin as formerly country roads can't handle the growth. I prefer Austin food, lakes and music. The people in Nashville tend to be friendlier.

Yeah it's been trending that way for awhile now.
It'll eventually be the San Antonio/Austin Metroplex. Crazy the number of folks who commute to work in either city.

Lakes 100%.
Nashville food is quickly becoming world class though. Its a push IMO.
Music has a larger presence here because its where the entire industry is centralized, but I like the local dive bar music scene much better in Austin for sure.
Traffic is getting brutal. We recently bought a small townhouse in the city to avoid that and its in a newly "gentrified" area, meaning still pretty hood, and prices are approaching $300 a sq. ft.
