America's national debt is now larger than the entire economy

The US national debt passed another grim milestone Thursday when the latest data showed that government debt held by the public — the most conservative way to measure what is owed — has surpassed America’s total annual economic output.
As of Tuesday, government debt held by the public is about $31.27 trillion, according to the US Treasury. Meanwhile, the US nominal gross domestic product (GDP) from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, was an estimated $31.22 trillion, according to new Commerce Department data released Thursday.
That imbalance is expected to worsen in the years ahead, with the US firmly on track to break the all-time record of a 106% debt-to-GDP ratio set in 1946 after World War II.
Already in this fiscal year, which began last October, the US has spent $1.17 trillion more than it has collected, according to the federal government, with the annual deficit projected to grow to nearly $2 trillion in the coming months.
quote:
A main driver of the surging debt, the CBO noted, is increased spending on programs like Social Security and Medicare as the population ages, not to mention interest payments on the debt itself.
Interest on the national debt has grown sharply, exceeding defense spending in fiscal year 2024.
Interest on the debt currently makes up 14% of US government spending. Put another way, over 1 in 7 dollars spent by the federal government is to service the debt.

Who really cares at this point?
Politicians (yes including boastful, lying Trump and his infant attitude towards people that question him) have completely ruined this country. Everything goes in cycles.

Nobody cares about the debt. Trump's biggest donor is a dual citizen spending millions to get rid of one of the few debt hawks in Congress because of her allegiance to a foreign country.

Yeah this is what we should be worried about. Probably the biggest threat to us and the government continues to spend like it is monopoly money. We are frickin over our kids and grandkids . There are only a handful of congressmen/senators who actually give a frick and back it up with their votes.

his infant attitude
The word you are looking for Mr. CFO is “infantile.” Infant is a noun, not an adjective.

2 : suitable to or characteristic of an infant especially : very immature infantile humor

The debt is bigger than the total market value of goods and services produced and sold in a year.

Back then we weren’t paying every Shaniqua and Chiquita inside the borders to sit at home and have children all day long.

quote:Exactly. It’s a talking point that no one will ever do anything about. It's smoke and mirrors anyway. 81% of the debt is owned domestically and by US government.
Who really cares at this point?
Andrew Jackson was the last president to have no national debt.

shite is going to hit the fan in 2032/33 when social security trust fund runs out.
Irresponsible elderly folk like dukke v, who have NO savings and rely solely on SS checks, will burn down Washington if/when their monthly checks are cut 20%.

"I’m the king of debt. I’m great with debt. Nobody knows debt better than me. I’ve made a fortune by using debt, and if things don’t work out I renegotiate the debt. I mean, that’s a smart thing, not a stupid thing."
"We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt," Trump said a few months prior on the campaign trail during an interview with The Washington Post. When asked how long it would take, Trump responded: "I would say over a period of eight years … The power is trade. Our deals are so bad."

So we could pay it all off in one year.
Those are rookie numbers.

It never matters who is elected president. It hasn’t mattered in 3 decades.
People that are still defending this geriatric clown are part of the problem. America needs a hero I feel the system will never allow.

America doesn’t have an economy
Most of y’all go sit in a cubicle and send emails and pat yourself on the back for being part of the “economy” but it’s really adult daycare

Term limits
Elect people with common sense
Cut govt spending by 50%
End entitlement programs, or let churches run them.

The "conservative" party voters in this country chose John McCain and Mitt Romney over Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012. The right have no desire to cut spending despite their limited government protestations. Any actual fiscal conservative is either ignored or vilified.
