But there were quite a bit of people trying to blame Obama in here
I think I'd be really pissed at Obama had he sent in military personnel and something had gone wrong and we lost more American lives.
Of course it also might have gone smoothly and then he's a hero!

Not an Obama supporter, but my guess is that the people in this thread calling for him to send in special ops are the same ones who wouldn't give him a shred of credit for killing Bin Laden.
Just a hunch, but I suspect that the guy really can't win here.

Sorry... He's right, you're wrong.
FYI it's not just limited to wars and conflicts. I am also taking into account that violent crimes are also way down overall.

It's certainly starting to appear that getting rid of these rats will require doing an about-face concerning our policy towards the Syrian gov't.
That is the Catch-22 here. In order to successfully eradicate ISIS, it will require cooperation among the US and either:
A.) The Assad regime that we have labeled and treated as a terrorist organization.
B.) The Iranian government.
Neither options are very attractive, and this explains the lack of direction we seem to have in dealing with the ISIS threat.
The best weapon against ISIS is non-radical Muslims who refuse to let the Caliphate spread any further. Their the only ones who can really stop it.

Not to mention, that data also takes into account internal conflict. Some of these countries have never gone through a period where they weren't struggling with internal conflict.

Not worth it IMO. These guys go out to cover a war, and end up hurting the US and it's foreign policy by getting captured.

Just because you can turn on your computer and see all of the world's problems at once doesn't mean that it's worse.
Good post. With the flow of information in today's age, we get whatever happens almost instataniously. Now, imagine if this up-to-date info had been around in Stalin's time or Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge? How would the world have reacted in the past?
But, ISIS (I find it odd that a group who disdains women so actually goes by a goddess's name...) is a real threat that just won't roll over.

Only worth it if rescuing this dude (and other hostages) is secondary to the main goal of wiping out their leadership.

The only way you're going to stop these terrorist groups right now is to place a dictator in power who will do anything to maintain power.
If only Iraq had one of those.......

It's not that he can't win here - its that he can't win anywhere because of his policies, both domestic and abroad. But, he didn't do anything with the OBL killing.

You could argue Assad fits this description perfectly. Too bad his actions during the Syrian revolution essentially led to his exile among the international community and left him without the means and support to effectively fight ISIS. His own fault. Normally evil against evil is fun to watch.

Not touching that.

Well, this is kind of my point.
If he didn't do anything to kill OBL, what could he possibly do here that would cause people to say he actually did something?
A lot of people earlier in the thread were calling for a special ops mission, but based on what you said, that would be him still doing nothing whether it was successful or not (and heaven help him if the mission fails).

I agree Obama's in a tight spot, but he, and his administration, have been so feeble in bad spots that you can't say this has nothing to do with him.
It's not a "blood on his hands" situation, but it's a situation where repeated incompetence and bad messaging have totally destroyed American foreign policy at present.
