We saw our former diving instructor the other day. My husband will likely do some more dives with him in the lake to try out some different masks that are supposed to be better for your ears if you have ear issues(like he has). He is trying to encourage me to continue diving as well but just do "shallow diving" in water that I can easily surface in if I feel freaked out. Guess he figures I shouldn't totally let my certification go to waste.

Fan of Ambergris Caye.

Damn. That looks awesome.

I have stayed in Xcalak, Mexico, which is only a short boat ride from Ambergris Caye and we took a day trip there. If you are really looking to get off the beaten path, take a look at Xcalak...

How were the mosquitoes? We stayed on the south end of the island and they were terrible. The north end of the island is a lot windier and I didn't find them as bad. And on the south end if you must use the "back road", don't walk it at night. There are a few crocodiles that hangout in the swampy areas on the side of the road.
It looks like the the island has gotten a lot busier in the last 10 years.

Very good review. I have eaten at most of the places you reviewed. It was one of the most relaxing vacations I have taken. The diving was top notch too. Especially if you head out to the atolls and the Blue Hole.

My wife & I stumbled upon Waruguma during a visit to Belize about 4 years ago. We asked the locals where they ate, and they pointed us there. We ate there about 4 times that week, and I didn't get to try all of the other excellent restaurants you mention here, but it was mainly because I couldn't get enough of the cabbage & lobster burritos.
Belize is a wonderful place.

Bookmarked.
Thanks for the review, OP.
The wife and I have our 10 year in December and were trying to decide between Belize and Costa Rica. This will help alot.

That's exactly how we found it! Same for El Fogon and Caroline's Cookin. Food was good....we ate at so many good places it was hard to keep track of them all, so I just posted a handful that we liked the best.
Belita's Deli on Caye Caulker was also super tasty and super cheap for breakfast. That grill you see gets fired up for lunch and she cooks some mean jerk chicken. I think it was $5 for a huge plate of it with a big side of rice.

Nice review. I was there last June which turned out to be in the middle of the rainy season.
One note. The advice about buying duty free alcohol and taking it to the island. That is illegal down there and anywhere else for that matter. You can only buy duty free alcohol when you are leaving to go home at the airport.

You sure? EVERYBODY does it and the airlines gladly help you transport it over to the island in the "duty free" bag, where booze is pretty much the only thing sold in the duty free shop. Do they just not care?

I went backpacking around San Ignacio, Caye Caulker, and Ambergris Caye last month. Wasn't a big fan of San Pedro. Caye Caulker was much cheaper, had a
younger crowd, generally liked the people a bit more. San Pedro reminded me of Destin.
San Ignacio was awesome too. Had to go on tours for most of the stuff I did, Xunantunich was closed when I was there for whatever reason. But the bus ticket to San Ignacio was 5 dollars everything else was pretty cheap.
Nowhere I ate stands out in my mind. Decent food but nothing to write home about. Highlights were ATM cave, Caracol, and the diving.

Thanks for this. I rented a house for a week and having my 40th birthday party in Ambergris Caye in June.

We stayed at Las Terrazas. It was a very nice place, but we did not stay on the grounds all that much because we wanted to get out and see the island. If we had the choice, we would have stayed at Ramon's Village just south of town, it has that Polynesian feel that we truly love and find it helps us feel "away".... And it is a hop skip and a jump from the main area of town.
We have friends that own a 3 bedroom penthouse condo at Las Terrazas and offered it up for free, so it was a no-brainer on where we chose to stay.

I figured there were only 800 other people in the world that knew about Xcalak.
