That's a pretty significant demolition project that will take months, not weeks.
Amazon's construction partners have demolished malls and replaced them with fulfillment centers (albeit smaller ones than what's proposed in Baton Rouge) before in other markets. Their timeline is probably pretty close to accurate.
I can see how a hurricane or another flood could really screw them up though.

I know a few years back there was talk of turning Airline into this "BUMP" plan, essentially an inner-loop that turns it into a form of an interstate, with side on-off ramps along the entire project... Seemed like a cool idea if the state had shite tons of money, but I doubt anything like this happens soon.
They should do this to Florida east of Airline - take it to Denham Springs. Just needs overpasses over the cross streets. Service roads are already there.

with side on-off ramps along the entire project

Yes I do! Thanks for the clarification

The facility will be more than 2.9 million square feet—more than twice the size of the mall—and is expected to eventually employ as many as 3,500 full- and part-time workers.
What's even more impressive than this is that only about 16 months will pass between the time they start demolishing Cortana Mall and the time they will complete the new fulfillment center.

My company does work for Amazon on the west coast. They don't frick around and they hold contractors accountable. It's their way or the highway. Fortunately, they love our work and we have a great relationship with them.

I think Amazon also looks at it as a way of giving back to the communities by replacing shuttered malls. Could also be seen an environmentally friendly. And good for PR to remove them bc everyone who passes by knows who caused it.

No Dillard's! Where am I going to get $6 dress shirts and $15 smoking jackets?!?!

I disagree.
These press releases and Project Management companies are famous for promising unrealistic timelines.
Is it possible to have 1,000 dump trucks and 100 excavators working 24/7 demolish the old mall in a few weeks? Absolutely. Probable? I doubt it.

You're dreaming. What you are saying is not impossible. It's just cost prohibitive.
Amazon's construction budget is not unlimited.

That is just to handle the Louisiana Sales Tax Division of Amazon.
I heard a Louisiana state rep say this week that 70 percent of Amazon's sales tax staff is dedicated just to Louisiana Sales tax filings.

I’m going to miss Chealsys Street Pub

Maybe someone in construction can explain, but why buy that location if you’re just going to demolish it? Could have purchased any number of lots in Louisiana. Was the price that good?
They are building a centralized location from which to ship items to the Baton Rouge area. It's probably the best location for that. It is in the population center at the corner of Airline and Florida blvd. It's a big plot of land with good infrastructure and also I'm sure Louisiana is dumb enough to pay them on top of all that.

It will serve a much larger area than Baton Rouge.

Eventually it'll just be for the Baton Rouge area. They will have the same thing in Lafayette and New Orleans. Maybe Hammond, too.
They seem to be moving more towards a web/mesh approach than a hub and spoke approach. New Orleans will be a more natural hub for international shipments.
If they were going to use this as a regional hub they would have built along the interstate.

Looks like it’s time to take some Cortana mall pictures inside and outside before it’s gone. Gonna be an interesting time.

No. New Orleans and Baton Rouge already have DC’s for last mile service (Siegen and Elmwood). Those DC’s are stocked by large regional fulfillment centers, like the one being built at Cortana. There is a smaller fulfillment center being built in Carencro to handle bulky items.
Lafayette and Slidell are getting smaller DC’s similar to what Baton Rouge already has off Siegen Lane. Lake Charles and Shreveport will eventually get one of those smaller centers too.
The massive 3,000,000 square foot building in the works for Cortana is the regional fulfillment center for the gulf coast between Mobile and Lake Charles. It will be approximately 30 times the size of the last mile DC’s that Amazon already operates in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

It’s definitely a regional hub.

The fulfillment center servicing Amazon DC’s in the New Orleans area will be BTR1 (Cortana).

It’s not just for the Baton Rouge area. This is why it’s such a big deal for the city and local media and politicians are making a big deal about it.
This is 3,000 employees and more square footage than any single Amazon facility currently in existence. It’s nothing like the DC they use to service Baton Rouge area customers (which already exists) or the Elmwood DC they use to service New Orleans.

Read the article posted. It’s right there in plain text.

Doesn’t matter that you disagree. They’ve done this before. You haven’t.
Look up Randal Park Mall in Ohio. It went from an abandoned shopping center to an Amazon Fulfillment center in less than 18 months.

Background is in commercial construction and renovation; specialized in mall properties before the recession.
If they don’t have issues with permits or weather, they can get very close to their target completion date if not hit it.
