You don't have to it if you don't like the pay.

Forced? Or offered? Are they not allowed to enter work unless on a sanctioned bus?

forced to work 60 hours a week with minimal breaks

Forced? Are they chained while there? Define forced? 60 hours a week is 8-6 Monday-Friday and 8-1 Saturdays. I used to work that for minimum wage over the summers in high school when we were super busy.

Wow. People who don't have a job other than a temporary warehouse job are bitching about being paid over minimum wage to stock warehouse orders for Amazon?

No they don't. That's the whole idea behind the free market.

The labor market only has the illusion of consent. In a capitalist society the vast majority of people must work to survive so just because one can quit a particular job doesn't mean that the owners of capital don't have a great deal of power over their workers and can treat them terribly because workers are horrified of being unemployed.

Walmart beat the government in responding with food/water/shelter to those impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Agreed, and then made money on the goods they effectively delivered. Governmental agencies aren't real good at doing these kinds of things, witness the US Postal Service, synonymous with mass shootings, not efficient work.

Walmart recently raised hourly pay (voluntarily; billion dollar impact to income statement) for its associates and provides training academies for those who want to turn their Walmart job into a career.
OK, why did they do this?

To survive in a tight labor market, not from any altruistic place.

America would be f'd if not for Walmart.
They are now too big to fail.

Being chained up doesn't mean forced either, because you know workers could always choose death instead of work

Three tents? How big are these tents? How many people are employed at an Amazon distribution center? I hardly consider it a crisis if a handful of frugal outdoorsmen want to maximize their take from a seasonal job.

You don't want to pay 10 pounds for a ride to and from work? Fine! Buy a used Volvo and see if it runs, parks and maintains itself for free.

Everyone (well, just about everyone) starts at the bottom but you learn to get better and improve your lot.

My first job was pushing shopping carts at a grocery store in BR. Some of my coworkers were in their 30's and talked about how once they got off work they'd spend all their money on beer. Even while working they largely goofed off. A couple were married - and hated it because they'd gotten a girl pregnant in high school and trapped themselves. Etc. etc. etc. One bad decision after another, and no interest in breaking the chain. Of course, they all claimed it was "bad luck".

By way of contrast, I know a guy today who came here from Mogadishu - literally grew up in a war zone - and with no formal education at all. He took as many minimum wage jobs as he could until he built up a little money. Most of the jobs were the sort where he didn't have to work all the time, he used that time to study English. Then he got into school and worked night security so he could get paid while he studied. Now he's making around $50k a year. He'll probably never be rich but he damn sure doesn't "have to" work for Amazon.

See the difference?

I should mention that my Somali friend also finds it incomprehensible that anyone can grow up here speaking English and going to public schools and do less well than he has.

Cool anecdotes but it still doesn't change the fact that low-level employees shouldn't be treated like shite

Where in the provided info was Amazon treating these people like shite?

They are simply trading their capitol for someone else's labor at a mutually agreed upon rate, both sides are free to not accept the others offer if they wish.

Where does it say they're treated like shite?

I see Amazon offering a shuttle to work and providing holiday jobs for otherwise unemployed temp workers

And low level employees continue to bitch, employers get tired of it and replace them with robots, and there are even more unemployed unskilled workers.

No one is forced to camp out. No one is forced to work there. They know the working conditions and pay and are free to leave it anytime
