This is specific to their HR, TWITCH, Advertising, and cloud computing organizations. Not their consumer retail business.

The latest round is expected to impact Amazon’s cloud computing, advertising, human resources and Twitch units.

Amazon made the decision to lay off more employees as it looks to streamline costs. It took into account the economy, as well as the “uncertainty that exists in the near future,” Jassy said. The company just wrapped up the second phase of its annual budgeting process, referred to internally as “OP2.”
“The overriding tenet of our annual planning this year was to be leaner while doing so in a way that enables us to still invest robustly in the key long-term customer experiences that we believe can meaningfully improve customers’ lives and Amazon as a whole,” Jassy said.
The latest round will primarily impact Amazon’s cloud computing, human resources, advertising and Twitch livestreaming businesses, Jassy said in the memo.

i’ll step in behalf of the national media.
Just because Amazon and Microsoft are laying off employees, that is not an indication of any type of recession or dip in the unemployment record numbers. nope, totally a coincidence. strongest economy ever.

But they still have money for Trans commercials.

I understand laying off people when needed but I get somewhat angry knowing 9000 people lost their jobs because a very small subset of people were trying to maintain their standard of living keeping their yachts and mansions

The HR they are mentioning are probably the recruiters. Recruiters are some of the first to get cut when there's a hiring freeze

I suspect these cuts are occurring for some of the AWS services that aren't pulling in enough cash.

Hopefully there’s a lot of “DEI” fat in these layoffs.

Why is Amazon laying off so many people in this booming economy? I just can't comprehend this

It absolutely is but whenever we’ve had a meeting with AWS they always seemed to have a bloated team. Although Amazon could be shifting to the partner-led model for their larger implementations.

I hear you, but these tech companies are a bit of a different situation. I went through the 10ks, with the exception of Apple, most of them raised head count by ~80-100% in the last ~2-3 years, much of it in “talent”, “product leads”, “customer success”, DEI. Then they love to tell others how they work too much and post online about it.
I hate seeing people lose their jobs too, but let’s not act like these were hardworking blue-collar types that have just become a synergy. I’ve gotten calls from tech corp fin jobs and generally pass as they always are hiring too much at once.

Because they hired too many when the economy was booming even more.
A quick search says Amazon has 1.5 million employees, so this 9k number is only 0.6% of their workforce. Most corporations have way more fat than that to cut.

I thought Apple Cloud is #1. Guess I'm wrong.

That was an amazingly smart pivot in their business model. I’d be interested see the revenue generated by each of their different services.
I bet AWS is at the top. Many companies don’t even have physical data centers anymore.
