I'm a little concerned that this will ripple into other industries. But I agree that they over hired.

Yeah Musk seems to be righting the ship IMO. It's not going to be easy, but he's probably one of the few people on earth that can do this properly.

IMO Twitter will probably have a better future than Facebook if things don't change over at META very soon.

Jealousy is a cruel handmaiden. Seriously, just finished an early lunch in my workout clothes. Made a nice salad for lunch, after putting up the dishes all while listening in on a meeting. I have some compliance and admin work I need to do while I participate in an few more meetings this afternoon, but will finish up in time to climb up into the deer stand before dark. Have a nice day at the plant Baw!

I work on average about 90-100 days a year and get to travel to interesting locations while doing it. Certainly not jealous of a bunch of nerds pretending to be useful by having teams meetings to argue about PowerPoint layouts and planning the next teams meeting. But enjoy your salad my friend.

Yes. That part of their business actually earns money.

E-commerce generates revenue but AWS is where the profits are.

"Amazon overall generated $24.8 billion in operating profits in 2021, and AWS was responsible for $18.5 billion (or 74%) of it. Basically, a business segment that contributes 14% of overall revenue is generating roughly three-quarters of Amazon's total operating profits."

eta: Amazon has around 1,608,000 employees. Laying off 10,000 isn't a huge hit.

It appears that corporate America has realized that all the WFH tech employees really aren’t as important as they think they are.

I don't think WFH is the issue in particular, but I do think it leads to less assimilation when it comes to corporate culture and involvement. It's definitely more difficult for a lot of younger people to learn on the job in a WFH environment if they are not the right personality .

They've been hiring like crazy for at least 2 years now, and it's just not producing the results they need. META has grown their ranks by almost 11,000 since Biden took office last year... which is kind of insane. It's damn hard to grow that fast without at least some new hires falling through the cracks.

I work for a tech startup and the entire industry is going through the same thing. The hiring was necessary because demand was there in 2020-21. From my understanding it's just that consumer habits for tech services changed as we emerged from the pandemic, so demand decreased while advertising costs spiked and most didn't foresee it. It was a perfect storm.

Right before peak shopping season? Yikes.

FedEx is going to furlough staff during peak season too. I don’t know if there’s a stronger sign than THAT.
