criticisms about their operations. Are they that efficient and does the city profit from their operations?

TulaneLSU was a street car operator in 2005. Let’s get him in here.

They never run on time and are slow.

I'm not sure any public transit is setup to turn a profit.

They are alright to kill time and for tourist to ride.

Efficient in terms of energy expenditure? I don’t know.

Efficient in terms of getting you where you need to go in a fast reliable fashion? Absolutely not.

The laissez faire attitude of New Orleans is MANIFESTED in steel and electricity in the Streetcar.

Will it get here in an hour? Five minutes? Nobody knows!

Will there be an hour between one car passing and the next? Or will they be sandwiched together? Nobody knows!

Will this journey I could walk in an hour take me three hours if I take the street car? Or will it take me five minutes? Nobody knows!

Just stand here and wait at the stop until one decides to appear. Who cares about punctuality baby!

That's pretty good cover. I'm going to investigate unsolved missing persons cases in NO from 2005.*

Pretty sure they’re privatized now. Since then the live tracker has always been accurate. And they added an app on your phone so you can pay with a credit card. I don’t look for a “schedule”. I use the app to see when the next one will arrive and it hasn’t let me down. This started within the last 2 years.

The app is actually pretty good at alerting where the cars are. I just don't get how there isn't a dispatcher telling the cars resting at the Carrollton end to go ahead and leave when the next car is all the way at Napoleon.

But with NORTA bringing all the employees in-house I am sure the efficiency will improve.

Most American cities don't have the density required for public transit to turn a profit, or even break even. An urban economics book I read once said that New York and Honolulu were the only American cities that had enough density where it was possible that public transit could break even without subsidies. Of course, that would depend on the system being run efficiently.

It's a government run program/service, I don't think profit should be the driving force.

We would have to do away with the entire interstate and transportation system if turning a profit was necessary.

Not at all.

No. In fact, very few public transit systems actually turn a profit if you look at them on a balance sheet. Public transit's ROI is on other benefits to society as a whole.

I used to ride the streetcar to work when I lived by Palmer Park and worked at Napoleon/St Charles. That said, it was never reliable and it was usually screwed up because of some maintenance.

The only thing better is when there is a shooting/murder on the tracks ahead.

Was surfing TD and riding towards downtown with my little girl when the shooting at Place St Charles happened over the summer. Had to do a quick jumpoff and back on so I didn't have to walk a mile back home.

For like $3 you can get a ticket to ride all the busses and street cars for a day. I use to use it all the time to go to concerts, I'd save a bundle getting an Air BNB a few blocks further out near a route. You know, back when concert were a thing. I didn't care about the speed of getting there, I was always way early for events.

They're significantly cheaper to operate than buses.

They're also nicer than buses. I used them to commute back in the day.
