A $170K a year to deliver packages??? Damn.
$52/hour and they get time and half every day they work more than 8 hours.
Most drive 12 hours shifts.
..and that's only with 9 years with the company. Longer and that hourly wage is higher.

Then factor in professions that take a shite load more schooling, by the time you are out, that driver has several years of experience and making bank.
Doesn’t work like that. Rarely will someone off the street hire in to a driver position at UPS. You have to start part time and pay your dues.
1 out of every 5 hires is non union. Or it used to be. And usually that hire is a person in low management that wants to move up.
So you could probably get a masters degree in the time it takes to start part time to being hired full time to drive. Especially at the smaller package centers.

I’ve known a couple UPS drivers and one that just retired. He didn’t make ANYWHERE CLOSE to $52/hr.
Making that with time and a half for anything over 8 hours at 12hrs/ day is $70k in JUST 100 work days.
Please correct me if I’m wrong so I can tell him how much they screwed him. He also worked his arse off but he’s now retired from there and receiving retirement benefits from them, military, and fire department. Lives pretty comfortably

but then I was informed that the bulk of my salary would have to be docked to pay union membership fees

Also, their vehicles were all manual transmission, which was kind of annoying to deal with while you're busy trying to multi-task by keeping your eyes on the road
I don't think you missed out on anything, because they clearly wouldn't hire such an idiot in the first place.
Union dues are 2.5x your hourly wage per month. That's not even within the ballpark of the "bulk of your salary"

Don’t you have to buy your own delivery truck?

My uncle retired about 5 years ago after 34 years and was making $45 an hour!

Second year UPS pilot pay is $174k. UPS better get the narrative correct on truck driver pay, because when the pilots renegotiate, they'll burn them down if truck drivers are "making" $170k.
