It’s a racist motorway
Gotta go

Bridge was built 50 years ago. Haven’t multiple generations been born and raised since? Really don’t think a bridge built half and century ago is the source of your problems

UMC is the only Level 1 trauma center in metro NOLA. If the Democrats get their way, they will cut off highway access to it, which will delay emergency care and peope will die. Someone gets in a bad wreck on the High Rise or catches a bullet in Little Woods, the plan is to drive 30 blocks down N. Broad and 10 blocks down Tulane? Or is the plan to go around (I10 to 610 to I10 to Tulane Ave. and then 10 or so blocks)? All this to expedite the gentrification of the city. Okay.
Houston's two Trauma Level One medical centers are a mile from a freeway (288) and 2 plus miles from the Southwest Freeway/69.
Most of the shootings in this city take place close enough to UMC where getting on the interstate isn't even happening.
Presumably there would still be an exit from the Ponchartrain Expressway at Claiborne to ground-level Claiborne, so ambulances could take that to Canal/Tulane.

This has to be done - the spirits of the elders have spoken.

I can’t believe what I just read. These idiots actually believe the dumbest shite. Yea knock it down and have more trees and neutral ground for the unemployed to hang out on. That’ll boom the economy. fricking morons.

Absolutely. They’re only looking out for you.
They want to make sure that you don’t bypass all of that New Orleans cultcha and carjackings while you're waiting at a red light.
Any congressman who votes for this sh!t should be required to drive the length of Claiborne Avenue at midnight in a convertible or an Escalade (with the windows rolled down) by themselves. From Judge Perez Drive to Jefferson Avenue. No speeding and no blowing through red lights.

Extend I-510 through Chalmette to the Westbank and then CCC. Boom port problem solved.
But the trees! What about the trees, man!?!?
Seriously, though, while that might mitigate some of the port issues, just the volume of traffic from population growth/commuter traffic to/from the north shore (specifically Slidell) over the last ~30 years has to be accounted for. That commute would be exponentially worse without that portion of expressway. If you forced all of that traffic through the westbank and the GNO, I can only imagine what things would look like, since the westbound traffic on the expressway approaching the bridge already resembles a parking lot at drive time. Someone better check these idiots’ math before they end up putting a serious nail in the downtown NOLA coffin.

With confederate statutes gone, racist streets renamed, and now this new beacon of hope, this should be the final nail in the white privilege coffin that has wrecked havoc on the city of New Orleans

Growth from Slidell has slowed... and a lot of those drivers would probably continue on 10 to the Ponchartrain.
Also, if this WFH home thing stays... even at a reduced rate than current... fewer commuters.

Tell them to take down I-10 in Metairie as well. People were forced out of their houses when they built it...

If we don’t get rid of that expressway man, it’ll make Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.

It wiped out a thriving black business district according to the story. I'd like a source for all these thriving businesses that were impossible to reinvent in another location.

Orleans Parish has pretty much been heaven on earth since they closed "Mister Go" and reduced the number of tax assessors. We're really just fine tuning at this point.

Absolutely, but my point is that there is still more volume from those commuters than there was 30 years ago. And even if they opted 610, then that only compounds the problem to PEW traffic inbound to the city.

That's just what the city traffic needs, a mixture of Slidell and Westbank commuters...

This shite is proposing mixing Slidell and Metairie commuters and will be just as much of a cluster frick...

At least this is finally a shove ready job right?

Most businesses would find it difficult to relocate somewhere else without financial assistance. Especially if their access to capital was limited.

Look at how the Perkins Road overpass area has been able to throw wrenches because they know this.

I don't think bringing the wrecking ball to Claiborne Elevated and calling it a day, is the answer.
Removing it would have to be part of a larger traffic / infrastructure plan for the region. Because you would have to relocate say 80-90 percent of the capacity to other routes. And that means expanding other routes / building new ones.
Now you are taking billions... which meant this idea was nothing more than a fanciful wish in the past.
But if Biden is gonna throw a few billion Biden Bucks towards the region and require that all of it be spent on roadways... now that's a different story.
