re: Am I just getting older, or does popular culture really suck as much as it seems?

The fact that you didn’t even mention the things that the current generation cares about shows you are getting old. I prefer my own generation as well, but kids now will love growing up when they did.

Don’t ever pick a random week from the 70s and look at the Billboard list or the top films.
Popular culture is hopelessly dumbed down. If you are reasonably intelligent, you are just going to be miserable.
I will say that television content is overall much better. But that’s it.

I think pop culture sucks too.
The good news is there are tons of alternatives available.

it's a generational thing.
My mom is 73 and she absolutely loves Nirvana. They're quite possibly her favorite band.

From what I can gather, it seems the only thing the current generation cares about is filming themselves daily doing menial tasks. There is an over abundance of people who think they are interesting now days

I don't know about pop culture in general, but the reason the music sucks is because there are no gate keepers anymore. As soon as Napster and Protools came out, music fell off a cliff, as many people warned about, from Metallica to Beck.

You should be too old to GAF

Electronic music is fantastic - if Kurt and Dave and Eddie and Weiland were 16 today they'd be into EDM instead of rock.
A good way to start is channel 53 (chill) on Sirius / XM to find your favourites.
Make the switch

Hate to break it to you, Alice In Chains and nirvana were definitely not pop culture. They were counter/alt culture.
Both clearly became part of "pop culture" -- especially Nirvana.
The lament here seems to be that such doesn't happen anymore. Cobain may have spared himself in this day, though.

Think about it this way, what distinguishes the culture, music or otherwise, the last two decades? The answer IMO, nothing, or very little. It’s just a morass of the same shite.

You are saying you need someone else to tell you what's good.

We had Alice in Chains and Nirvana. Now it's some beat with autotune.
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the death of regional radio. They removed the cap on how many stations one could own in the name of competition but instead, it lead to corporations buying up all the little guys
90.1 in Houston or WWOZ are the last of a dying breed. Most other radio stations are clear-channel and play what they push.
In the old days, a local DJ in Seattle might play AIC cause he saw them at a bar the day before and liked them. Now radio is crap and no one listens. It is really hard for musicians to get their stuff heard
The music industry has always been astroturfed but exacerbated in the late 90s acts like Nsync/backstreet/ect were disney and Mega Lebel creations. Everything that is going to be modestly popular is going to whitewashed and disneyed.
Then Napster hit, sucked the money out of the industry. All that are left are stadium acts and that band your friend likes.

No, I'm saying people used to have to get really good at music, practice, rehearse, try, fail, reboot, try again, then really nail it.
People don't have to do that anymore. Make a song about how bad your pussy stinks and get a million clicks. Profit.
ETA- another way to put it, imagine if museums didn't have curators, people could just walk off the street and hang their own shite up. Then people wonder why museums suck.

And all these people who claim to be influencers or whatever the hell. I feel like if you have to list that you are an influencer, you aint much of one. You think Tom Cruise or Michael Jordan have to go around the world and tell people they are famous????? NOPE!
