Here's what you do...
Pull the ultimate surprise. Show up at his apartment. Knock. Hide. When he opens the door to look around for who knocked, slash his throat. Then as he bleeds out tell him:

That’s good advice. I live by this motto: you begin a job. Unless you really know someone don’t try to make jokes or be witty with coworkers. Some lowlife that’s having a difficult day or week might jump your arse or start a fight. Best thing to do is say very little and don’t try to be funny or political. Do your job and keep the peace.
