If you want to offload more services to the private sector (something I agree with, by the way) we need a much better system for evaluating, awarding, and monitoring these contracts.

And that will only happen if we elect people who want to make the city better, not just enrich their contributors.

I agree. What we need are simple/transparent ways to monitor budgets/contracts and bids. The public is kept in the dark for way too many things and then when news stories break everyone gets upset but it should never get to that point. These people in office are just flat out doing it wrong and they are too invested to take their own interests out of the equation.

I don't know if he is crooked or not. But, I do not understand all the people dick riding SVTIV on here.

My memory is that he got his start in garbage in da parish where his family is politically connected. I know of no prior experience he had to justify that contract.

He then bid on the Nagin led N.O. privatization contract along with Richards and Metro. He go the F.Q. portion. According the Times Pic at the time, those contracts were very generous. Again from memory, the FMV of a "stop" was about ~$12 and the contract paid ~ $18. In addition, the number of "stops" was hard to pin down and there was widespread speculation that they were charging for more "stops" than they actually served.

He sold the contract for $ and got out of that part of the business. Good for him, bad for the taxpayers, but I don't see how it should be considered evidence of business acumen.

True. If they're shady, but at least doing a good job for the public, that's still better than being shady and incompetent.

It's funny because Torres was simply very competent in running his businesses, but in New Orleans competence is excellence because everything is dysfunction.

The board can allocate up to $85.3 million from its rainy day fund for this emergency.

If calling it a rainy day fund didn't have such tragic effects on the people of New Orleans, that name would be hilarious.

Even the criticism of corruption is vague and speculation of potential abuse. Pretty much every government contract has pork, hell, most private ones do as well.

If you want to question where his family money comes from, then maybe you have a story. You would be linking generations back though and I don't think New Orleans wants to lift that curtain.

I know it is a hopeless wish, but I would rather shady not be mayor.

Sidenote: it was described to me that the candidate Stacy Head was referring to as the one demanding and immediate pledge of support and a $25k contribution or be shut out of all city business is Desiree.

I've heard bad things about Bagneris in the past, but I believe he comes from the Dutch Morial line, which was competent, corrupt government administration. He's my choice till something better shows up.

That's a pretty easy accusation to follow up on.

frick Stacy Head if she is going to insinuate this, but not give any actual facts.

Stacy isn't the only one saying this as several business owners are saying the same thing privately and they were forced to write checks.

A budget of 3 million dollars? I guess this could be a great opportunity to put our companies 6 vac trucks to use! Where do we sign up?

This is what I am wondering, there have to be several dozen companies in the area that can handle Vac truck work. Seems like this would be easy labor just to bid out.

he one good thing to come out of this is that everyone now is seeing just how incompetent and awful the NOLA city government is.

Somehow the Landrieu's will spin this into a win.
For 8 years this a-hole come hurricane season proclaimed Hurricane readiness.

12 years since Katrina with FEMA money at hand and they haven't fix the streets or even touched the pumping system.
Maybe they didn't want to damage the new streets with the weight of discarded monument traffic.
