Gentlemen,

How do you go about determining how you will distribute charitable donations every year. I'm not interested in who you decide to give money to, but the quantum you give to each. Say you already have a dozen or so organizations that you will donate to, how do you decide the split between say all the k-12 private schools you attended, your undergrad institution, graduate school, professional school, symphony, various museums, church, etc.? Do you consider who needs the money the most, who made the largest impact on the success you have experienced in life, or maybe the amount of work they do for your community?

Thanks,

I just give to st Jude. If something else comes along that I would like to donate to, then I do that too.

That's why I started a foundation and just hire people to run it. Too much work.

Send them all invitations by email to a presentation banquet at White Oak Plantation announcing that they will be presented with their donations at that time. Sometimes I will park near by just to see who shows up.

I know money is the only means, so how are you giving back to your community then? I try to donate as much time as possible as well, but without people writing sizable checks, most of these organizations cant function.

I donate where I can, but I don't understand the need to support an institution I paid to attend. My tuition is donation enough.

Thank you for this link, very thought provoking. This is the type of reflection I am going through right now to determine how best to allocate the funds. Although I want to give back to my private high school, I start to wonder why they need an over $100mm endowment. Maybe the few grand I send them every year could be better spent elsewhere. Or maybe you just endow a scholarship once and leave it at that.

The EBR Tax Assessor does all the heavy lifting.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Do you think you are the only one paying taxes? I'm talking about how to invest in organizations after I've already paid my taxes. We can, and should, be giving back in more than one way.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but there are so many organizations out there doing such wonderful work, that I wouldn't feel right depriving them of wealth either.
