Here's what I did.

Gave 1 million to St Jude
Gave 1 million to the Food Bank atSt Vincent de Paul
Gave LSU 1million
Gave TAF 1 million
Gave my church 1 million
Gave my parent's church 1 million
Gave 1 million to my grandkid's schools
Gave 1 million for flood relief
Gave 1 million to the Tea Party

And I kept the other 90 percent in my piggy bank
Gave 1 million to my old high school

Thanks, I tend to donate more to political causes in election years, but I find that hosting per plate dinners is the most effective way to leverage my donations with the wealth of my friends and neighbors.

I must commend you doubleb. Now do you give this annually or was this a one time shot? My goal is to hopefully reach those amounts cumulatively over the next couple decades.

Unfortunately, I can't help you quantify what's most important to you, but it should be a blend of factors. Personally, I give the most to the organization that contributes to someone or something that needs it more than others and is highly impactful. Is that your school? Is that your church? How are they spending the money? That's what you need to find out I suppose. They should be happy to discuss it with you. My personal choice is to donate to highly rated organizations that have had no real influence over my life, but can greatly impact one or several people's lives. Also, it is important to me that the money goes to the cause and not a ton of administrative costs. Sometimes it is in my community, but most of the time it is not. There are so many organizations, just do a little more research within the organizations and that should help you decide.

Why do you give so much? What are you trying to cleanse yourself of with this penance?

Always donate to local non profits first. Find out which ones operate solely off fundraising, donations, and grants. Improving your local community should always be the priority, specifically kids.

Just remember, you get 2 points for every 1K donated to LSU philanthropic programs. More bang for your buck.
