So was reading an article about a man that died after eating a chicken burger that had been dipped into buttermilk. Here's the link LINK. The story states 8% of children in this country now having allergies. Is this a thing that has taken off in the last 20 to 30 years? Is it that we are more body conscious these days or is it that childrens genetics are being altered somehow ? Seems like this number is getting bigger every decade. Are any of the OT allergic to any types of foods? Still blows my mind people can die eating a burger/peanut or getting stung by a bee.

Had this same discussion yesterday with my father. Peanuts, gluten, shellfish, dairy....all sorts of shite I never experienced with any of my friends as a kid.

And we ate like shite.

Wife has food allergies and a latex allergy Can eat most of the foods from the nightshade family.

Can’t eat eggplant or any kind of pepper (bell, banana, jalapeño, chili, etc)

Worst part is paprika is used as a coloring agent and is derived from red pepper seeds. So we can’t eat out unless she can talk to the chief before hand.

There were known food allergies back in the 30s and 40s when my grandmother and great grandmother were teaching. At least according to my grandmother. I would imagine some things like peanut butter and other things weren't as commonly used as now for school age kids? As a medic I've worked several close calls due to shrimp and peanut butter and a few deaths due to them. It's a serious issue.

My son’s school wants to ban anything with peanut butter (my son’s favorite snack) for their mid morning snack even though they aren’t allowed to share anyway because two kids out of 600 have an allergy. Screw that. I haven’t changed a thing and won’t be.

You can thank vaccines for all these allergic reactions.

Allergies were not always so easy to diagnose. For a long time people thought they had issues, not allergies. Being allergic doesn’t mean you’ll die. It just means you don’t digest it as well or what have you.

I was being very general. Yeah, some people have allergies that could be fatal. That isn’t the case for everyone though. Like, I have an allergy that gives me rashes, but it isn’t lethal.

I developed a shellfish allergy about 5 years ago. I grew up in Nola and my favorite foods have always been shrimp & crawfish. It hasn’t become life threatening yet but I get hives all over my face and neck whenever I decide to eat shellfish anyway. It sucks.

I think its odd people can become allergic to something later in life, or lose an allergy they had earlier in life.

Have a friend who use to be lactose intolerant growing up and now it's not an issue at all for him.

Agree. How did I develop an allergy for foods I ate 3-4 times a week for my entire life? I’ve also developed an allergy to something that causes hives and swelling in my sinuses and eye socket - behind my eyes.

I’ve heard from other adults about developing allergies late in life and wonder what’s causing this.

Both my kids unfortunately have bad dairy and egg allergies. I'm really hoping they grow out of it, because it's such a pain to avoid those two things. I've got a severe peanut allergy, so maybe it's genetic. IDK.

While I dont expect everyone to accommodate for us, I'm totally ok with schools banning peanut products. Small kids just dont know what they can and can't eat and kids share stuff constantly. I came really close to dying one time from a peanut reaction, so if that happened to my kid because some other parent didnt want to be inconvenienced by their kid not eating peanut butter, I'd be raging

Was the only food allergy I had ever heard of when I was growing up.

I suspect the rise in allergies has to do with the more indoor upbringing of kids these days leading to a lack of exposure to allergens at earlier ages.

I dont think this has anything to do with it. We noticed it in both our kids almost right after birth. Had them tested when they turned 1.

You’re going to feel like shite when your kid inadvertently kills some kid.
