A college degree (I think) is reinforced exponentially in a person with a truly dynamic personality. Someone who is willing to think outside the box and work their arse off.

You don't learn that in college.

You are correct but there isn't a box on the job application for this skillset.

True. I graduated in Dec 2009 with a Chemistry degree and a few internships under my belt. I didn't get a job until late July 2010 working 3rd shift as a temp compounding for a pharma company. Hardly what I wanted to do. I worked hard and was hired permanent in Nov 2010. Now I work testing all of the incoming raw materials. I'm not breaking the bank, but I do okay with great benefits and retirement.

ETA: By the way, a JD (in particular) and MBA is still a very valuable degree in many other areas. We hire a fair share of JDs and they work in business/financials.

An interview is a great way to set yourself apart. Sit down and sell yourself.

Like I said, the diploma will get you in the door; the rest is up to you.

If you get a stupid degree, you really have to think outside the box to find a solid job. It would be like a journalism major only wanting to work for the newspaper, and nowhere else. I mean, they can do everything from working in TV to marketing for a big company or events, but are stuck on working for the newspaper, so they don't get a job

A huge part of the problem is that universities have raised tuition to that make a healthy roi almost impossible. We have allowed universities to grossly exaggerate their value in the workplace and it's only getting worse.

This is very true.

I work in marketing/communications, and it is a broad label.

Only problem I have found with it is that many companies call it a "marketing" position in the interview and it often ends up being almost exclusively administration/secretary work.

That is true but it seems like most kids these days want the high paying job right away, they are not content starting at the bottom and working their way up. A lot of that comes from the fact they take out 6 figure loans for college but they have nobody to blame for that but themselves.

I disagree they have nobody to blame but themselves. They can blame their parents, higher education institutions and the gov't.

parents telling their children to go to college no matter what, which is unrealistic
Higher education institutions for flat out lying about career prospects
And the gov't for subsidizing schooling inefficiently.

That is why you start in the mail room if you have to. If you are talented and with the right company you will rise quickly.

What is a "stupid degree"? I've said this before, but you don't go to college to get a job. That is what trade schools are for. You go to college to become educated. Being educated makes it more likely for you to become employed.

If you go to a company and talk to a manager and ask them what they studied in college, chances are they won't say "Managerial studies, of course." He/she will probably say Literature, History, or some variety of science.

Now, there are ridiculous degrees out there. I'm not saying there aren't. I'm just saying our outlook on colleges and universities needs to change.

This is important too. Learning the hard way on this one. I'm not above a low-level starting place, but there are companies out there with absolutely zero room for growth.

Nope. It makes me laugh to think of him even riding a horse.....not the "country" type at all. He's more of a $25,000 Rolex and $5,000 suit type of guy.....

A very large part of the work generated by our knowledge-based economy can be classified as administration/secretary work.
