Did you ever read Nietzsche's Geneology of Morality?
He makes the point the romans did and extends it, Christianity was the religion of the poor and downtrodden. And it taught the faithful to turn the other cheek. The Romans didn't respect this, it was manly. But for Nietzsche, the danger is that creates resentment. Rather than teach the faithful to do something, they're taught to accept their fate, which can lead to festering resentment.
So what happens when you have this cadre of outsiders, who look on Greek Life with envy, but at the same time lack the means or courage to join in? And by means I don't mean money.
What happens to those people? I suppose they try and tear them whole thing down.

I'm not sure that they envy Greek life so much as just succumb to group think.

LSU is imposing liability/guilt on literally hundreds of kids who did nothing wrong, without any due process whatsoever
SFP, while legally adults, they are still students (kids) and we all learned the lesson in life as students... life isn't fair.

As a general question to those questioning admins, what would have been a more appropriate response?
Its been said.
Banning activities of the frat that apparently has some questions regarding their ability to control their shite until the investigation can settle it out.
Blanket bans are often stupid.

It takes a stupid motherfricker to support unfair fascist treatment of a group of people just because he happens to not care for that group.
fricking geeds still jealous after all these years.

While the Greek Affairs office hasn't been Pro Greek since Victor Felts was there, I get the move. You don't want something else bad happening while the media is all over the place. I'd be telling everyone to not wear letters for awhile.

Insurance is the big issue, but any chapter with history and money will consider going independent. And why not? It makes their life easier. They gain little from school approval.
The danger for the university is that - ban backfires. The chapters do go private and they have no control over their activities.
It's a two way street. Fraternities reap some big advantages to being on campus too. Try even finding a suitable piece of real estate near campus. Then try dealing with neighbors who dont want you there and send the police to your door every time the music gets loud or someone takes a leak off the back balcony. Much less the financial and other considerations. Finding a mortgage lender and someone willing to write an insurance policy is hella more complicated and expensive off campus.
And, it's a lot harder to sell yourself to prospective members if you dont actually have a presence on campus. Fraternities will always exist in some form. But the ones that thrive off campus would beva small minority.

My little brother who is a pledge at LSU. Obviously this could just be rumor

I wasn't in a frat at LSU in the early 90's but several friends were and I can't remember one instance of alcohol poisoning related death until Ben Wynn. The drinking age was 18 and it seemed like all the big parties people were drinking keg beer or garbage cans full of jungle juice. Don't know if it makes a difference just an observation that all this weird shite like butt chugging and hazing with everclear came after the drinking age moved to 21.

Yes. Much of this stuff is due to higher drinking age and more restrictions.

Is this a new attitude between frats and indys? I don't remember this shite in the early 90's. I partied with frat stars all the time and vice versa. I never got shite on for being an indy. Maybe it's this new age fratstar that feels like they have something to prove that is the cause of shite like this happening and ruining a good thing for everybody.

This. So much of this. LSU will use this to (further) fundamentally change the Greek system at LSU. Ifnthey can run them off, great. But if nothing else they can try to gain more control and influence over how these orgs are run.
As to the chapters going private , good luck with that. See how rush goes with no row. Good luck getting a frat house off Darylrymple (sp) that isn't on campus. Or anywhere else for that matter. The Greeks can definitely go off campus. I'm sure the university would like to be rid of the responsibility. But that's not gonna be beneficial to the frats.

It's always been said as a joke. I know we didn't care if you were greek or not unless you went out of your way to make a deal out of it
