In my opinion any trait in life Say comparing:

How good you are at sports.
Your compassion towards others.
Your intelligence.
Alcoholism.

Is partially genetics and partially how you are raised/how you decide yourself to be. Classic nature vs nurture.

I was a natural. A real five-tool player. That can't be taught. Alas, my career is pretty much over at this point. I'm a shadow of my former glory.

Alcoholism stems from coming home from a 3 week business trip to find the driver's seat in your car moved all the way back, a pair of size 16 shoes under the bed, and your bedsheets smelling like cocoa butter.

Genetic predisposition to addiction(s). Which is why you'll see an alcoholic parent have a daughter with an eating disorder.

it's very well known at this point that the answer is both. Not to be a dick, but a simple google search will bring up a ton of abstracts on studies completed.

We are just a product of our environment and genes. Its kind of scary when you think about it.

Some people have a higher propensity to addiction.

That being said, it's not a disease, it's a mental disorder.

Um.

Kid dying of cancer = disease.

Guy not being able to put down a bottle of booze = not disease

Let's try this instead...

Kid dying of cancer = disease.

Schizophrenia = not a disease?

Are you a doctor?

ETA: You did not explain the difference between a mental disorder and disease.

The Irish have the reputation they do for a reason. Ditto American Indians...
