It's not an amount, it's simply one's relationship with a substance. Someone who downs a case of beer one night a week is not an alcoholic, but someone who comes home from work (or wakes up) and steadily drinks their poison consistently is. I drink every day but am hardly ever 'wasted' or even feel 'drunk'. It's just something I do to calm the nerves, among other things.

It's not so much the quantity of drinks that define alcoholism its the question of whether or not the individual has a chemical or psychological dependence on it. Also most people hear alcoholism and think of some lush passed out in the corner. There are people who simply cannot function without it due to their addiction but are very productive members of society similar to the near universal addiction to caffeine in this country

It takes weakness to sink into addiction, no doubt. It takes incredible strength to overcome it however.

What is the criteria for marijuana addiction?

If I have one, I'll have 20. And that's why I don't go out anymore. IF someone is there to compete with, it's worse.

I was the guy buying drinks for everyone. Not out of kindness, but rather because I wanted everyone to pass out or throw up. Maybe then they would be as miserable as I was drinking. Hated going out. Hated staying in. Hated my girlfriend. Hated everything. Rather than trying to make myself feel better, I tried to make everyone else feel worse.

That's the real weakness.

As awful as it is, and as awesome as my life is now, I catch myself missing it. Missing certain people. They, like me, have all moved on. But there was a certain rush to it. Walk into the local place and the bartender would give me two flaming dps, a shot of bourbon, a red bull, and a ten oz beer. In less than a minute, I'd order my next beer and one for whoever was standing next to me. My satisfaction came from hearing them talk to the bartender about who I was as I walked off. From then on I would alternate between beers, shots of 100 proof, and redbull until closing. Any regulars would then head to to a house party where I would keep feeding everyone alcohol, and myself more, until everyone dropped.

That's how I met my female counterpart, and together we ruined each other.

I was never disfunctional during all of this, and maintained a facade that no one saw through.

And while I do drink at least one day a month, and always do it to excess when I do. Now, it's more happiness and laughing while cooking. But I realize that weakness bubbles right there.

And if anyone starts chugging or shotgunning beers, the respectable guy I am now can't help but to walk over and egg them on.

That's addiction. But for me it wasn't the drink itself. It was just finding something I truly excelled in and making sure everyone knew they were not on my level.

I was, a douche.
