re: Air Travelers Resisting the ‘Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat’

Further, these fat people need to pay extra for their seats to offset the fewer passengers the plane can accommodate, extra fuel to carry them, and hazard pay for the flight attendants that have to deal with them

Obesity in america should be treated like cancer. I'd be willing to bet obesity is more deadly.

The airport nearest to my house flies only Spirit. They've since added service to PIT.
They have those signs up at their gate that explains what they charge for. Looks like a miserable experience.

I flew frontier recently. It's basic transportation. Make sure to bring a seat cushion for any flight longer than 2 hours or you'll be in severe pain, limping off. Seat has zero padding.
I've personally made the decision now to pay up and be comfortable. United or Delta for this guy.
Joined some friends in Chicago for long weekend. Dipshits caught the 6am cattle car for 100 bucks. The wife and I flew at 10am first class united having complimentary drinks all the way. Worth every penny.

Average Shoulder width for men in the US is 18.5" wide.
Compare that to seat width. There's a problem even if you don't sit next to an unusually large person.
On Seat Guru, a version of American Airline's 777 has 16.2" wide seats (10 across in economy). They use those for long hauls flights. I don't see how that could possibly be adequate unless the origin and destination is in southeast Asia.

Jet Blue has nice seats. Very Roomy. Jet Blue actually markets their nice seating arrangements. Their fares are pretty low as well. Virgin is also really good. Delta is decent. Southwest is unbearable. Frontier and Spirit are also unbearably small.
In general, if you want to fly for $75-$100 on some special summer deal or whatever, you're going to have to do it in poverty seats. That's just how it goes. If you want a comfortable ride, pay for it.
I'm not a huge dude, but I have wide shoulders and chest because I'm a Chad so I don't fly Southwest, frontier, Spirit, etc. because their seats are built for toddlers. It's worth it to me to fly a different airline. If I fly those airlines, I know what I'm getting myself into. And I'm doing it because I'm looking for the cheapest tin can to fly me wherever I need to go.

Hands down one of the worst airlines. Two weeks ago they got me to Hawaii a day late and got me home a day late. With 0 offer for compensation. Never again. Completely inept.

I barely like flying Southwest with the no seat assignment check in nonsense. Spirit is for poors.
Most of the time if you fly American, you can just not pick a seat and usually you'll get better seats at the gate for free.

Was it their fault? Airlines aren't required to do shite unless it's their fault. Like mechanical issues. Weather won't get you vouchers or anything.

Flew United Houston to Honolulu last week on 777 nonstop. The plane was packed and it was all about selling. Rent tablets, then peddling food, then here's your drink and a cookie. There were some miserable looking people on that 8 hr flight! Big people packed in 10 abreast.

2nd the jet blue recommendation... it's probably the best overall value and comfort. they just don't fly many destinations from my hacienda.
i can't tolerate the southwest cattle car. that's just me.
i'll pay more and fly direct, paying for a seat towards the front of the plane that involves someone serving me booze. never understood the crowd that pays 50 bucks to fly from dallas to wherever and then take the time to post about how much it sucks. you get what you pay for.

Airbus seats are usually wider. Airlines however order seats and interiors separately from the airplane itself. They can specify what size seats, where they are placed and even where the restrooms are placed in their orders.
Spirit sucks. Im not paying to ride in a cattle car if I can help it.

I can’t stand this new trend where they are advertising credit cards and meal options over the PA system for half the flight. Just let me sit in peace damnit. Before long it will be Sarah from Card Services on every flight.

I'm 6'2" with very broad shoulders, a little more around the waist than there used to be but I'm not morbidly obese and I've just hired a personal trainer to get my arse back in shape. FLYING SUCKS A DICK. If it's a longer flight than 3 hours, I go first/business class because economy/coach is miserable for a larger than average person. Thankfully, when I travel for business it's usually to smaller cities (I'm in Tulsa a lot), so the airplanes, while smaller, aren't usually at capacity and if there's a window seat available then I'm one of the first to get offered. My last flight out there a couple of months ago, I was one of 8 passengers on the flight and it was amazing.
My wife argued really hard about us flying first class to Europe 2 years ago, she was really adamant that it was a waste of money but I wasn't budging. We either flew first class, took a boat, or we weren't going. Halfway through the flight she turned to me and admitted that I was right. A long flight is miserable and economy makes it 10 times worse. I understand that not everyone can afford FC and I'm thankful that we can, otherwise I'd never travel overseas.

777 should never be more than 9 abreast, which makes both the seat and the isle about 18.5" wide.
Boeing supposedly has a plan to make 11 across possible.

I am able to put everything I need for a whole week in a backpack, and almost always travel solo. I for one like the fact that I don't have to pay more for my ticket to subsidize everyone else carrying all the extra weight on the plane. Imagine how fast flights could board and take off, land and deplane, if no one had a carry-on bag, checked luggage, or cared where they sat. Airline travel is simply a means to an end for me, to get me from point A to point B.

From purely a passenger comfort perspective, the A320 is definitely superior to the 737.
The fuselage is exactly 8" wider. Too narrow to add an extra seat, but wide enough to completely trump the 737 and 757 on shoulder space, overhead storage, restroom space, and isle width.
From a market perspective, the 737 is a great product for domestic flights. They just can't extend it and make it a viable replacement for the 757 though. When they canceled the 757 (which has the same width as the 737, but a taller gear and extended length and range), they gave that market to Airbus.
There are rumors of a 737-1000ER...but even the -900ER has some issues with tail strikes and load balance. I think the -900ER is about as far as they can really push that air frame. It is time for a Boeing product to slot between the 737 and 787 for long and thin routes. It's too bad the 757 isn't around anymore.
