Air Travelers Resisting the ‘Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat’

Air Travelers Resisting the ‘Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat’
NYT
Spirit Airlines, at least, is honest about the tight quarters on its planes. “We’re a cozy airline,” it says on its website. “We add extra seats to our planes so we can fly with more people. This lowers ticket prices for everyone, just like a car pool.”
quote:
“There are two goals with seats: to squeeze in more people and to make the plane lighter,” said Richard Aboulafia, aviation analyst with the Teal Group.
While low-cost airlines like Spirit have narrowed the distance between rows of seats to as little as 28 inches, most of the big American airlines have kept the distance — what’s known in the business as seat pitch — at 30 inches. Anything less, the major airlines have found, pushes already beleaguered travelers to their limits.
quote:
The push to shrink the space between rows of seats comes as major carriers are squeezing 10 abreast in more long-haul jets, so that the middle section has four seats — and, by definition, two middle seats — rather than three.
But customers will be spared this experience on most flights within the United States, Mr. Aboulafia said, because there just isn’t enough space. “The good news is that pretty much every domestic flight you’re going to take is going to be in a 737 or A320 — no way can you do four-three,” he said.
quote:
Paul Hudson, president of Flyers Rights, said the need for seat regulation is driven by safety concerns. Passengers have been getting taller and wider, even as airlines push for slimmer seats, but regulations still stipulate that planes have to be able to be evacuated in just a minute and a half.
To the baw's of the OT: How wide are your shoulders?
Economy Seat Widths:
Southwest Airlines 737 - 17.00 Inches
Delta A320 - 18.00 Inches
Delta 737-900 - 17.20 Inches
Delta 717-200 - 18.20 Inches
Delta 777-200 - 18.50 Inches
American A320 - 18.00 Inches
American 737-800 - 17.00 Inches
American 777-200 - 17.10 Inches
United ERJ145 - 17.30 Inches
United ERJ175 - 18.00 Inches
United 737-900 - 17.30 Inches
United 777-200 - 18.00 Inches
Do any of you fly with Spirit? How do you like the "pre-reclined" seats?

Airplanes make me wish I were short. I almost always pay extra for exit row seats. Seat width isn’t a huge issue, but my knees get bruised even when the seat in front of me isn’t reclined.

When I fly now I usually always upgrade to the delta comfort. Totally worth the 30-50 bucks

On some airlines in economy, my knees are pressed pretty hard against the seat in front of me. It would be nice if they kept the outlet/USB plug in pack somewhere else and made sure that there was nothing sharp in the lower part of the seat backs since my knees are there.

Have never flown spirit, but will be flying frontier later this year, which, to my understanding, is basically spirit. But it was cheap

Frontier used to be a decent airline. It sucks if they’ve gone the Spirit route.

So what's the "resistance" here? Airlines are doing whatever they want and people continue to fly more than ever.

They made me pay extra for my carry on, so I suspect they're in the same category.

Bitching on Facebook, I guess. Flying is a necessary evil.

Frontier has transitioned to spirit over last few years.

There is talk of regulation, but for the most part people are still buying the dirt cheap tickets from Spirit or Frontier.
So much so that Delta, American, and United have offered "super saver" grade seats that are not even assigned until you get to the gate.

Two normal size guys sitting next to each other on many domestic flights are going to be uncomfortable - especially if their shoulder height is the same level.

My dick would barely fit in that seat.
Smaller seats and fatter people spells a disaster for that poor middle seat person.

Maybe this will convince fat people to stop flying. Or more likely, I’ll have to share more of my seat with the whale next to me

That is why I book a window seat so I can lean into the bubble of the window to give me some more space

Spirit is the Greyhound of the skies. if you like that, then it is for you. Most people are not aware that you must purchase everything online once you "pay" for a seat or you will be penalized. If you have them print your boarding pass, it is 10 dollars. Once you pay for everything (seats, baggage, carry on, etc) then the price is not that much lower and the experience is shite.

They need to make a "fat section" for planes where eligibility is determined by girth. Keep the smell and grossness quarantined, and leave us people who respect ourselves to fly in peace
