computers are great monitors, not so great decision makers, drones are flown by pilots, and yes, the military does it every day, but the only reason it will eventually get approval is when the gen whatevers are in control and think that putting a computer in charge is the best way because that’s their upbringing
We’ll go to single pilot airplanes first with “copilots” sitting at a computer helping out during critical phases of flight and during emergencies. These guys will be copilot for 3-5 flights at time. I’m pretty sure NASA and FEDEX already did a study on this.

Germanwings Flight 9525 (March 2015) 144 Fatalities
Outside of the 9/11 flights that one and Air France 1447 are the most terrifying plane crashes I could imagine. I remember reading the people on the Germanwings flight pretty much knew they were going to die for about 8 minutes. Just a controlled, hopeless descent knowing you were going to crash into a mountain and die for 8 minutes

The fight to remove the flight engineers was a colossal fight. I imagine this change will be even tougher. I’d hate to be writing the regs on that.
There’s still a few floating around. I still fly with one.

We all just have to join a monastery I guess.

Eh. USAF already does this all over the world with their drones.
AI doesn't fly those Brainiac. Those are remotely flown by humans.
He confuses AI for some guy in the air force named AL.

Pilots have a self-preservation instinct. Autopilots are at the whim of the programmer who will not be on the plane. OR at the behest of hackers, who also would not be on the plane.

They also have a higher loss rate than manned aircraft.

Like auto pilot? Is this something new? (No)

I just can’t imagine how AI would be able to make the right decisions regarding safely flying an aircraft. Diversions due to weather, medical emergencies with passengers, mechanical malfunctions. There’s a multitude of things that can happen that AI won’t be able to handle.

I've deployed to several bases with an UAV mission. They may have a higher loss rate, but the are tasked with more risky missions, like staying on station for hours and providing combat support (with no support) while not having near the armor of an A10.

Combat losses aside, they still have a higher loss rate.
Your butt in the seat = skin in the game.
Your butt in the trailer = oh well, that sucked.
