Earlier this year, Louisiana reached a deal with the federal government to end a long-winding and contentious battle over misspent grant money that was part of the Road Home program, aimed at helping victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

As part of the deal, Louisiana would only have to pay $32.5 million back to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development—a dramatic decrease from $300 million it could have owed.

But this summer, HUD unexpectedly told Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration that it could keep $20.5 million of that money, as long as the state spent it to help people in parishes most impacted by the devastating 2005 storms.

Edwards’ administration has decided to spend that money on the long-planned but slow-moving New Orleans-Baton Rouge passenger rail line.

$20M won't build a train from New Orleans to New Orleans.

Ah, yes. The project no one asked for or wants . . . I'm guessing there wasn't a buggy whip maker or candlestick maker project that was ready to go.

Let's take all of the inconvenience of mass travel AND make it slower and more expensive. That's a winning formula right there!

How does a train help parishes with storm damages?

Would be better spent cleaning out storm drains

Existing rail lines. Improvements to BR station. Maybe one in Gonzales or River Parish area.

Not a dedicated train between the two, just a once daily each way. And not at times benefical to commuters.

Gonna need two more zeros at the end of that number

Yes, but it could fund a study that helps us know what studies are needed.

Because during the next hurricane, they can use the train to evacuate, get struck on the tracks in LaPlace and die in a massive hurricane-induced derailment.

I can't imagine two things that link up better than Jay Dardenne being the advocate for the train project. Picture perfect.

Im not against the idea for something like this, but we dont have the population for this.

Like the Brightline in Fl seems badass, but there are millions more people living between orlando and miami.

That's only one of a million reasons why you'd be justified in being against the actual idea. It's isn't even high speed rail or anything. It is the technology of yesteryear today!
