is our population bright enough, attentive enough, and unbiased enough to fairly conduct a "jury of our peers" system of justice?

The OJ Simpson trial, the Casey Anthony trial, and now the Steven Avery trial lead me to a sad conclusion: no, it is not.

I think I would prefer a panel of professional judges system such as employed by Japan.

And thanks in advance for accepting my two cents.

A lawyer told me:
If your innocent, you want a trial by judge. If your guilty, you want a trial by jury.

At the very least there should be a general intelligence test with a 75th percentile threshold to serve.

A liberal wanting to do away yet another part of the Constitution. Color me shocked.

You watched a slanted documentary, devised by two lesbians and are now fancying yourself as some judicial heavyweight?

I've done nothing criminal, but it scares me that this country with its large percentage of science-deniers and superstition-abiders would think itself analytical enough to render sound judgments.

No. However, the other options seem so set up for corruption or centralizing power too much.

there is a lot wrong with our political system and much of it is manifested in our various legal systems

No, but it's the lesser evil. A consistent panel of judges will undoubtedly (over time) develop its own ideology and biases, and how would the logitics of that even work considering the case volume in this country.

But your intuition is correct, 50% of the population is below the bell curve, and our mean isn't exactly exceptional to begin with.

Absolutely not. Especially in inner cities and rural areas.

My guess is with your reputation you weren't the right person to start this thread.

So many of my "peers" are dumbarses. I would be scared as shite if I were anyone relying on a jury to decide my fate.

At the very least, as a poster mentioned, it would be nice to have a jury of average intelligence.....you're asking people who aren't very bright to understand scientific evidence and why it is or isn't valid.
