LINK

Nearly $3 billion has been allocated to flood and hurricane protection projects in the state. More than half a billion will be allocated to complete the Comite Diversion Canal project and other major flood control projects in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Congressman Garret Graves, as chair of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee, has been working closely with the White House and the Army Corps of Engineers to secure this funding

Huge news for East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Ascension.

It’s 30 years late. And technically it’s just a big ditch to divert a lot of water away from the populated areas and into the Mississippi River.

Louisiana sucks at infrastructure.

They buy up the land for this yet? Or is the commission over this still “working on it”?

I’m not familiar with the specifics of the project, but is it possible that this may have adverse effects on the Miss river and levees around BR?

I'm sure DOTD has studied this and then studied it a second time and probably conducted several dozen micro-studies as well.

Is this a dam at Darlington or a glorified ditch?

I cant believe the US Govt would entrust $500 million to any LA politician.

Don't get your hopes up. Stupid environmental regulations....

quote:

Because the canal will run through swamps, authorities must also purchase and protect offsetting wetlands to mitigate the impact to the environment. Deciding where to buy mitigation land became a nightmare several years ago when authorities tried to build an early component of the canal but locked horns over how to handle mitigation. Land is worth varying amounts of credit based on multiple factors, but Rietschier estimates that officials will have to buy approximately 1,500 more acres to satisfy environmental requirements.

Any chance this becomes like the Amite River Diversion Canal with housing, boat launches, camps, etc built alongside it?

What swamp? I've been up and down that river, never seen a swamp. Unless their talking about where Whites Bayou empties into the river.

Seems the easiest thing to do would be to construct a canal from the Comite to Thompson Creek, and discharge into the MS.

I think they wanted to capture runoff farther south to prevent more of it from running into the Amite.

In this case the site is already selected. It’s running between Zachary and Baker. Maybe it will act like a moat.

The site was selected 30 years ago. That’s how old the project is.
