Sister Wilhelmina died on May 29, 2019, at age 95, and was buried in a wooden coffin. According to the Catholic News Agency, the abbess and sisters recently decided to relocate her body to inside their monastery chapel, a custom for founders.

But instead of finding bones in the coffin, the sisters discovered what appeared to be an intact body. The body had not been embalmed, the article said, and the coffin had a crack that had allowed moisture and dirt to get inside.

quote:

“The body was covered in a layer of mold that had grown due to the high levels of condensation within the cracked coffin,” the Catholic News Agency reported. “Despite the dampness, little of her body and nothing of her habit disintegrated during the four years.”

I am a pretty devout Catholic and have troubles understanding the meaning placed on bodies that don't decompose. Maybe I should study scripture and what the church says, but it seems to me they think it is some sort of divine "favor" to not have your earthly body decay post-mortem.

See Psalm 16 as a starting point.

Very simple. The person lived an exemplary life of purity, charity, and union with God. In reward for their holiness, God did not allow the soul's body to undergo decay or corruption.

This dear nun is a Saint, and I expect the One Holy and Apostolic Catholic Church will convey that merited crown on her in due time.

She lived a life of purity and love of God, and we're left with evidence of her sanctity.

Lord God of Creation - I pray for the poor souls in purgatory
