So the Advocate ran an article about how the photographer kept photographing the crash scene at the Endymion parade and people are PISSED.

Advocate Article

quote:

At one of the groups, he shot first from above, then knelt down to shoot at the victim’s level. A person lying on the ground said, “Don’t take my picture” and swatted a hand at him, he said.

In situations like this, Threlkeld normally just walks away, he said.

But before he could react, a man uttered some profanity and punched Threlkeld on the side of his head. Threlkeld fell over from the blow, felt light-headed and thought he might black out. Worst of all, his glasses had flown off his head. He looked around a little but realized there was no way he’d find them among all the debris on the ground.

So he decided to keep shooting without them, though he couldn’t tell whether his shots were in focus. He got up, walked over next to the pickup and got pictures of the driver, Neilson Rizzuto, on the ground being arrested, though he didn’t realize what he’d gotten. “At the time I was shooting, it looked like the cops were helping him,” he said.

Some of the Facebook Comments
quote:

Jill LeBlanc DiLorenzo This article sounds as if they are proud of their photographer. SMH... shame on you, Advocate. I would have punched him as well had he been taking pics of my injured family. He got what he deserved and I'm proud of whoever did it to him.

quote:

Kristy Shrader Shame on you "The Advocate!" He should have been trying to help rather than trying to take photos. It was probably a family member of one of the injured who pinched him! No props should be given for these photos! Praise God there were no fatalities.

quote:

Emily Fisher How are these pictures even allowed to be posted? I can't imagine those injured really want their bloody pictures posted all over the internet.

quote:

Katherine Kelley Wild Wow Advocate, this is AWFUL! I kinda hope these people sue y'all. I can't even believe y'all would post this.

Thoughts?

There's a fine line between reporting news and respecting the victims. I get that everyone has a job to do, but I think you have to take stock of each situation and see if you're doing the public any good in regards to how you're reporting the news.

I could not agree more with you Rummel but I have never met one who wouldn't take a picture of a man on fire before he grabbed a water hose.

To each their own, but you also have to count the fact that there were already multiple people assessing the situation and offering help to victims. Not to mention the countless first responders on scene to work the parade that then worked the crash scene.

Of course, really.

You're looking at this in a vacuum, with 20/20 vision.

Put yourself in their situation, maybe you've been drinking all day...having a good time with your family, and then some car plows through your group and your wife, child, friends are hurt, bleeding, crying in pain...you're freaking out, in shock, have no clue of the severity of their injuries...and then you see some guy lying on the ground taking pictures of them while they lay there.

You're not looking for credentials, and likely don't give two-shits even if you see them, all you know is that your family is vulnerable, and this person is taking advantage of that, for whatever reason.

You need to stop hanging out in the hood.

He's got a camera. He's not a doctor.

He's a photographer. Not a doctor.

He can photo document what happened.
He probably isn't good at much else.

If he's the only person there, sure. Render aid.
But, and I'm going out on a limb here, my guess is there were others there.

I don't give a frick if 10 doctors are working on my kid, if you're lying on the ground taking pictures of her, then I'm gonna break your jaw.

In a public place? That's aggravated assault.

I doubt that.

Plus, if he's doing his job, you can't fault the guy.

It could end up being helpful to you down the line. Then you'd be greatful.

You don't know me. If you did, then you'd know how far I would go to protect my family.

Well, you could have started by not dragging them to Endymion.

That would have been smart.

Now you're hating on Endymion? Looks like we're gonna have to settle this at Sonic.

The victims will be damned happy to have those pics when it comes time for lawsuits.

They're probably all too stupid to think that far ahead.

I understand if no one was there helping, but as someone already mentioned, there was a lot of first responders already there. Do they want this photographer to push the people who know what they're doing out of the way so he can administer first aid with his camera?

Isn't it it his job to visually chronicle the world around him as it happens and offer an unvarnished view of what has unfolded so that others may know the truth of what is happening in the world around them? Why hit the man for that? I also assume there were plenty of other more qualified rendering aid. Their heroism was likely also part of what he captured. Too easy and intellectually lazy to simply strike out at the media for doing their jobs when something bad happens. The photographer didn't drive drunk into the crowd. He just happened to be there and do his job.
