Looking for advice on painting a brick house from anyone on here who has done it before.

Seal. Either by sanding or priming.

We will definetly be painting it white. It is already off-white to light tan brick. The brick also has some texturing on the face of it

What I have read on line talks about special paint that is breathable to keep moisture from being locked inside the bricks. Is this a special sealant or just something standard?

I think skim coating the surface to make it smooth would be worth the cost.

Tell me about skim coating. I just googled but am not sure it would work.

i did it.
4200 sf.
took 6 5-gallon tubs of white paint and 2 days of paint sprayer rental from home depot.
came out great.
eta prepare to wind up spraying yourself in the face about 5x
also ended up with lots of white shrubs and grass for awhile. its amazing how long those white leaves stayed white.

Painted this exact brick. Used a good sprayer and haven't had an issue in 5 years. Takes longer to tape up windows and doors than to paint.

THIS!!!!!!! This is 90% of the job. spraying is just a zen exercise in patience.
i should add we used the TOP OF THE LINE Sherwin Williams paint (cant remember what it was called now) because we wanted the house to look good.
the old brick was ugly..that 1960s random shades of brown brick. the house looks fierce now. just repainting alone made it look 100x better.
