We will be using a sprayer. My dad bought a pretty nice one a couple years ago for a project. It's a big stationary painter.

stain it...don't paint it. there are some great brick/masonry stains from US Formliner (i do not work for them).

I think skim coating the surface to make it smooth would be worth the cost.
I did this to my old house by City Park. It had old 1920s brick surrounding the front porch that had crumbling mortar. I was broke and had minimal mortaring skills so I skim coated the whole thing. I painted to match the wood siding, painted the decorative trim to match the window styles and it looked great then and has held up 12 year later.
It took a weekend to skim and another weekend to paint. You will need a crew to skim a whole house.

it was $100/day for the one i rented at home depot and it can take any paint you put in it.
the only trick is to pull the pin and remove the nozzle before you run 10-20 gallons of water through to clean it or you'll never get the paint out and that will run you another $100 if you fail to clean it properly.

Advice on Painting a Brick House
Simple ... don't do it.
Bricks are made to breath ... paint prevents them from doing that.
Bricks are made to absorb moisture when it is hot and then evaporate that moisture to help cool the house.
And bricks absorb heat when it is cold and they help warm the house.
If your mortar is starting to fail then get it tuckpointed. If not, you can put a breathable coating on them with a spray gun to help restore their shine if necessary.
But once you paint bricks you can never go back without sandblasting and that is a whole another nightmare.

You can buy an airless sprayer for a couple hundred bucks at lowes. You should have used xylene to clean it instead of water.

THIS!!!!!!! This is 90% of the job. spraying is just a zen exercise in patience.
i should add we used the TOP OF THE LINE Sherwin Williams paint (cant remember what it was called now) because we wanted the house to look good.
the old brick was ugly..that 1960s random shades of brown brick. the house looks fierce now. just repainting alone made it look 100x better.
You have any before/after pics?
