I own it. I thought of selling it, but it was my first home in Oxford. Bought for $140k in 2015 and have a 2.875% interest rate on it. The monthly rent is $1,800 and mortgage is $750.

Rent uhaul and hire movers to load/unload.

I’ve hired through the uhaul website before and it turned out well.

I’ve moved 3 times in the last 8 years. If you have nice shite, pay someone reputable and don’t try to save money.

My living room stuff is really nice and new. My bedroom items are all about 10+ years old. Aside from my personal mattress in the master bedroom, I would be okay parting with it.

Y'all are really making me think just selling it all would be better.

If you own it and plan to rent it out, leave the furniture you don't have a personal connection to(family stuff, antiques, etc) and rent it as furnished. Get new stuff for your new home. Saves the headache of moving it.

I already have a tenant lined up and they have their own stuff. It is fine. $1,800/month for this place is top notch and I am happy with it and got a good tenant, solid income, both parents have good-paying jobs, and they have one child. I am satisfied.

My last move across 5 states, employer gave $12k for moving expenses. Had a 5bed 3000sf house, 2 cars, wife kid and dog and we wanted to save $ and pack ourselves because movers suck and break things anyway

1) ordered the biggest pod and had delivered 2 weeks before the move and scheduled to be dropped off 3 days after move in of new place,
cost was ~$1500/$2kish

2) loaded pod with everything except a small coffee table to eat on, bare minimum kitchen utensils, mattresses to sleep on and a single couch. had plenty of time to slowly load and pack and then see what couldn’t fit to purge/sell

3) sold one of the cars

4) rented smallest uhaul 10ft van the day before the move for one way to load up the more sentimental/fragile boxes, the essentials we kept would need for when we arrived, and everything else we had left. Me and dog drive straight through, unloaded it and returned the next day total cost was ~$800

5) wife and kid drove the other car and stopped and spent the night at nice hotel halfway through. this allowed me the time unload the essentials from the small uhaul uninterrupted

6) POD then arrived a few days after they arrived and me and the wife unloaded it slowly the next few nights and then they picked it up

Pocketed around $9k when it was all said and done and used that to buy some new furniture and it was pretty stress free all things considered. The 10ft Uhaul just drove like a van

I’d suggest go through stuff that you honestly want to keep or if you haven’t used an item in say 30 days or so - then maybe pitch it

Perfect opportunity to get rid of 3/4 of what you own.

By 35 you’ve accumulated a lot of shite. Don’t pay someone to move said shite to your new home.

we moved from Dallas area to Lafayette last Summer. 4 bedrooms of furniture. Found a local mover that does moves inside of 500 miles for $4200.00.

We packed everything. They were professional, fast and really careful. (nothing was broken).

Look for similar companies where you live or do it yourself. I am over 50 and don't want to ever move myself again.

This. You "buy" manpower off of Uhaul.com, buy them pizzas, and they load your shite.

But honestly, I think labor and pizza cost me $250 15 years ago to dump stuff in my uHaul, but it only cost me $750 to have them pack and move stuff (ETA: from house to APT), and then unload it on the third floor. This is me having them pack, too, but I also didn't take all of the bullshite kitchen shite my ex-wife had accrued over years that was worth $2 a part, but would cost $5 to pack. I took all the cast iron, woo hoo!

Schedule ahead of time, and have someone come out to give you an estimate before haulers show up. That way there are no surprises. I got over $100 cut off my tab after they realized how little they actually needed to load.

Friend,

For long moves like yours I have found Budget to be both cheaper and more reliable with honoring the reservation than Uhaul. Uhaul is cheaper for intra-city moves. Penske has by far the nicer trucks and a reservation with them is 100% guaranteed, but costs sometimes twice as much as Budget. Look for online coupon codes for all three.

You can often find free boxes on Craigslist. I do hope your furniture is of good quality, at least American made. It saddens me when I see how people buy junk furniture and throw it out after a few years. There is so much good furniture to be found at estate sales these days, but it seems the disposable average American would rather buy plastic and tin furniture than buy something they can pass on to their grandchildren.

Hiring movers is expensive and I have never used professional movers. Mother wanted to hire movers for the big move from Prytania to Mid-City, but when i asked some of my friends from the old youth group and volleyball team, they were happy to help. It took a full day, but the six of us did it. We neither broke anything nor was anything stolen. It saved Mother thousands.

It is important to pack the truck well. Be organized and use every inch. If I am in Ocean Springs in August I would be glad to help. Perhaps when the time is closer you could put out a call for volunteers on the OT to help you. It could be a great time, working, sweating, laughing and telling stories. Maybe we could do a Top 10 rpg37 furniture pieces list!

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Fortunately, I pride myself of having very little knick knack stuff. My bedroom furniture has served me well, but like I mentioned, aside from the master mattress, everything is over ten years old. I have one full sized dresser and a couple of consoles. My living room items are the only stuff I plan on keeping with absolute certainty.

Completely under-rated take. I knew three days into my apartment that I wasn't renewing, so I have a lot of unopened boxes. I have one egg pan, and one 10" cast iron with lid that have been unpacked, and that's it.

Leave it. Buy another, if you need it.

If I didn't need to open the box for months, I don't need that shite.
